South Belt Elementary School Principal Candy Howard is named the 2015-16 Elementary Principal of the Year for Pasadena ISD.
South Houston High School Principal Dr. Steven Fullen is named the Secondary Principal of the Year for Pasadena ISD.
Long-time friends and colleagues Candy Howard, South Belt Elementary, and Dr. Steven Fullen, South Houston High School, have been selected as the Elementary and Secondary Principals of the Year for 2016 by the Pasadena Independent School District.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. DeeAnn Powell and several district administrators delivered the news Friday afternoon by surprising the honorees at both campuses.
“Through their outstanding leadership, hard work, dedication and collaboration with employees, our principals give students an opportunity to be successful,” Powell said. “We congratulate you for your service and thank you for all you do for students in Pasadena ISD.”
The winners were selected by district and campus administrators for their excellence in leadership.
Howard has dedicated 32 years of service to the Pasadena ISD. She served alongside her friend and colleague Dr. Fullen as a fifth grade music teacher at Kruse Elementary from 1984 to 1997. Howard rose to a leadership position at Jensen first as assistant principal and then principal from 1997 to 2000. In 2009, Howard was named principal of South Belt Elementary where she continues to inspire students and staff.
Superintendent Powell, Board of Trustee member Kenny Fernandez and associate superintendents of campus development surprised Howard with the good news.
“To have worked in this district for 32 years and seen the excellence achieved at all levels, especially with my peers, I am speechless,” Howard said. “I come to work each day ready to be a servant leader, and believe that each of our students can learn – and they do. I am incredibly fortunate to work with a dedicated staff who also believe in our students, and who are daily problem solvers doing whatever it takes for student success.”
Dr. Fullen has made a positive impact in the lives of Pasadena ISD students for 21 years. He began as a fifth grade bilingual teacher at Kruse in 1995, then a peer facilitator at Pomeroy and later a bilingual and ESL facilitator for the Alternative Certification Program. In 2002, Dr. Fullen served as assistant principal at Dobie before joining the South Houston High School Mighty Trojans as the school’s principal in 2007, where he continues to lead students and staff.
Dr. Fullen was recognized with a surprise celebration that included the South Houston drill team, the cheerleading squad and JROTC flag team congratulating their principal on the achievement.
“Every morning during announcements we end with a reminder to ‘Do what’s right,’” Dr. Fullen said. “This award is not about me, it’s about you – the students, because you chose to work with me and your teachers to do what’s right and build a strong educational foundation on which you can build toward your future.”
Howard and Fullen will be recognized at the 2015-2016 Region 4 Education Service Center Principal Recognition Ceremony April 6.
