In a warm-up to the school’s 60th
anniversary celebration next year, South Houston High welcomed back about 400 alumni last week for three major events marking the school’s 58th
First year South Houston Principal Andrea Wenke, picking up the homecoming reins from her predecessor, Dr. Steve Fullen, presided over a pair of ceremonies – one at a campus open house on Thursday and the other at the Trojans’ homecoming football game on Saturday -- in which three alumni and two teachers were inducted into the school’s Hall of Honor.
Also honored at the two induction events was the late Bob Fay, the Trojans’ first “Hector” mascot and a member of the school’s Class of 1959. At the campus open house, Bob Steubing, president of the school’s Alumni Association, presented members of the Fay family with a plaque honoring him as the recipient of the 2016 David M. Ainsworth Alumni Spirit Award.
Fay and the Hall of Honor inductees were honored again during a midfield ceremony before the Saturday game.
It was just a year ago that Fay, decked out in full “Hector” regalia, cut the ribbon opening the school’s new Hall of History museum. Less than a month later, he succumbed to a heart attack at age 74.
Addressing several dozen alumni at the Thursday induction reception, Steubing detailed the association’s role in establishing a memorial plaque for Fay, located at the entrance to the museum, just a few feet from where he cut the ceremonial ribbon last October.
About 150 alumni returned to the school for activities on Thursday. Another 100 attended the football game on Saturday.
About 350 people -- many of them alumni – attended a musical production, “Broadway Extravaganza II,” on Friday night in the school auditorium. The revue celebrated the 30-yard career (1974 to 2004) of Sally Schott as South Houston’s choral director.
About 80 of Schott’s former students teammed up with current choir students for the revue.
Steubing presented current choral director Brenda Varvoutis with an alumni association check for $1,000 to help fund the choir’s 2017 musical, “Once Upon A Mattress.”
“This is just unbelievable,” Varvoutis said.
Alumni inducted into the school’s Hall of Honor were the late Wayne Armstrong, Class of 1964, who helped developed some of the most important weapons systems in use by the U.S. Navy; Dee Ann Pederson, Class of 1978, an award-winning wildlife photographer and conservationist; and Stewart Russell, Class of 1987, the chief of police for the Pasadena ISD.
Former teachers inducted were Patricia Bundy, business; and Barbara Lee, English. Both served as department heads during their long tenures at the school.
