HOUSTON -- Disregard opening day and the 2017 soccer season ended for the Dobie girls on Friday night exactly the way it began – with a 2-0 loss to Atascocita.
The Lady Eagles scored a goal in each half to eliminate the Lady Longhorns in the first round of state playoff action at Galena Park ISD Stadium.
The No. 3 seed in District 22-6A, Dobie lost to Atascocita by the same score in their second game of the season on Jan. 7. The Lady Eagles finished the regular season as runners-up in District 21-6A.
The Dobie boys’ plunge into the soccer playoffs on Friday night proved to be the mirror-opposite of the Lady Longhorns’ contest. The Longhorns, champions of 22-6A, turned back Goose Creek Memorial 2-0 in Baytown.
The Dobie boys advance to area round play next week against either Brazoswood or Clear Creek.
Atascocita’s Jazmin Grant stunned the Lady Longhorns with a goal barely three minutes into the game. Dobie picked up the pace for the remainder of the first, but the Lady Eagles asserted complete control in the second half, especially on the defensive end.
At the 20:36 mark of the second half, Atascocita’s Natalie Kees scored on a pass from Erin Peters to give her team a 2-0 lead. Dobie fans bitterly disputed the official’s decision that no foul occurred on the goal, and the Longhorns’ bench received an ejection.
