J. Frank Dobie and Pasadena Memorial High Schools recently advanced to the state competition of the Texas Academic Decathlon after ranking ninth and thirteenth in the state, respectively, after a strong showing at regionals.

The Academic Decathlon promotes student achievement and learning by challenging students in various academic subjects. Teams are comprised of up to nine students who represent different grade point divisions.

There is a series of 10 events including an interview in front of judges, a written essay, speeches, a written comprehensive exam in math, social science, economics, literature, art, music and the Super Quiz.

Both high school teams placed in the cumulating event, the Super Quiz, with Dobie placing first and Memorial third.

Additionally, 44 Pasadena ISD students took home individual medals. Dobie led the way with 31 students, Memorial with 11 students and South Houston having two students bring home a medal.
