Memorial High backfield mates Ahrmon Mcleod, Reggie Turner and Jordan Wyatt each ran for a touchdown in the first quarter as the Mavericks jumped to a commanding lead and then withstood a Clear Lake rally for a 36-27 victory on Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Mavericks used the victory to post their first 2-0 mark since 2005.
Dobie, meanwhile, stormed into the victory column with 26-14 victory over Clear Springs in League City.
Daryl Edwards, starting at quarterback for the first time, ran for 134 yards and tossed a 1-yard TD pass to Patrick Hurst for the game's first score.
Memorial jumped to a 22-0 first-quarter lead on a 5-yard TD run by Mcleod, a 17-yard TD burst by Reggie Turner and a 37-yard TD romp by Wyatt, the Mavericks' senior quarterback. A quarter-ending safety helped Memorial compensate for two early conversion failures.
Wyatt tacked on a 17-yard TD pass to Adrian Boutte late in the first half. But Memorial's 29-6 lead at intermission was nearly erased by the Falcons, who scored the next 21 points.
The Mavericks needed another TD pass by Wyatt -- this one a 29-yard toss to Turner with 1:59 left in the game -- to seal the outcome.
Both teams were stymied by penalties (115 in all) and turnovers, three for the Falcons and two for Memorial.
The Longhorns, who lost to Atascocita in their season-opener, subdued Clear Springs with a strong running game and impressive run defense. Clear Springs was limited to only 14 yards rushing while Dobie posted 273 of its 289 total yards on the ground.
Edwards ran for 134 yards on 24 carries. Hurst backed him with 76 yards on 19 carries.
The Longhorns doubled their 6-0 halftime lead midway through the third quarter when Dwight Tucker returned a punt 59 yards for a TD. Clear Springs quickly reclaimed the score on a fumble recovery by Matt Cody.
Dobie put the game away with two TDs in less than two minutes of the fourth quarter. Hurst scored on a 1-yard run and teammate Joe Gonzalez followed with a 31-yard scoring burst.

Mcleod muscles his way into the end zone from five yards out for Memorial's first TD.
