FOOTBALL: Memorial's Air Attack Not Enough to Subdue La Porte |
SMUGMUG On-Line for this Event: CLICK HERE
BLOCKED FG TAKES WIND OUT OF MAVS' PLAYOFF SAILS
Memorial quarterback Jordan Wyatt spread his arms in celebration as he ducks into the end zone on a 1-yard TD burst in the second quarter. The TD gave the Mavericks a 9-0 lead.
The Memorial sideline, including Coach Chris Quillian (far right), erupts in celebration over Justin Acosta's third-quarter TD on a 70-yard pass from Wyatt.
DEER PARK -- For much of Saturday afternoon, Memorial High quarterback Jordan Wyatt launched rainbows across a clear blue sky and teammate Adrian Boutte ran under them. Alas, there was no pot of gold at the other end for the Mavericks. Favored La Porte used a blocked field goal in the waning minutes and an 80-yard touchdown run by Victor Holmes to beat the spirited and spry Mavericks, 29-21, at Deer Park's Abshier Stadium. Five times Wyatt connected with Boutte, his senior classmate, on deep throws that stunned the Bulldogs and laid the ground work for Memorial's upset bid. Those five passes covered 162 yards. Wyatt, known more for his running than his passing skills, also completed three passes to Justin Acosta covering 88 yards. Acosta darted 70 yards for a TD on a short pass from Wyatt with 4:26 left in the third quarter, giving the Mavericks a 21-16 lead. But that was the final time Memorial saw the end zone. Holmes scored on a 6-yard run not quite two minutes into the fourth quarter to put La Porte on top, 22-21. But Memorial put together another promising drive that bit deep into the final period. The key play was a 39-yard completion from Wyatt to Boutte that carried to the La Porte 4. But the Mavericks were flagged for illegal procedure on first down and followed that with two incompletions. On third down, Wyatt tried to skirt the right side but only got as far as the 3. Memorial needed only a 20-yard field goal -- the equivalent of an extra point -- to take the lead. The Bulldogs responded with a strong rush and blocked Tara Cole's kick. Actually, it was a double block. La Porte's Malik Graves, diving from the left side, got a hand on the ball and deflected it into teammate Hoza Scott, coming hard up the middle. On the next snap, Holmes cracked the Memorial defense for his 80-yard scamper with 3:58 left. A La Porte interception on the Mavericks' ensuing possession sealed the outcome. Cole kicked a 32-yard field goal in the first quarter to open the scoring. A 40-yard toss from Wyatt to Boutte set up the score. The Mavericks came out strong, but were hurt by the absence of rushing star Reggie Turner, who was forced out of the game in the first quarter after a hard hit on the sideline. The Mavericks took a 9-0 lead midway through the second quarter when Wyatt scored from a yard out. The drive was fueled by another Wyatt to Boutte connection, this one for 30 yards. Cole's PAT attempt was blocked. La Porte answered with a 42-yard field goal by Eric Medina late in the first half. That looked to be the final score of the half. But La Porte recovered an Ahrmon Mcleod fumble and took a 10-9 halftime lead with 11 seconds left when quarterback Jordan Jackson connected with Holmes from 25 yards out, the first of Holmes's three TDs. Mcleod atoned with a 17-yard TD run early in the third quarter after two more clutch catches by Boutte of deep throws by Wyatt. Another failed PAT stalled Memorial's lead at 15-10. La Porte retaliated with a 22-yard TD strike from Jackson to Jahvey Mark, but couldn't convert the PAT. Trailing 16-15, the Mavericks answered with Wyatt's 70-yard strike to Acosta. A try for two points failed, leaving Memorial just a 21-16 edge. That disappeared on Holmes's 6-yard TD run. Memorial's hopes to advance vanished on the blocked field goal and Holmes's follow-up 80-yard dash. Wyatt completed only 9 of his 24 passes in the game, but that was good for 285 yards. Mark caught eight passes for La Porte that covered 140 yards. Both teams finished with just over 400 yards of offense. La Porte was flagged 10 times for 105. On one play in the first half, the Bulldogs drew four unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, including three for cursing the referee. The Mavericks finished the season, their first under Coach Chris Quillian, with an 8-3 record.
Memorial receiver Adrian Boutte slips inside of La Porte's Ellis Hutchinson to haul in a 40-yard pass from Wyatt in the first quarter. The completion helped set up the Mavericks' first points, a field goal by Tara Cole. Boutte goes high in the air to snag a 30-yard strike from Wyatt in the second quarter. The catch set up a Wyatt's 1-yard TD run. Memorial's Justin Acosta breaks into the clear on a 70-yard TD gallop after grabbing a pass from Wyatt in the third quarter. Boutte hauls in another deep throw from Wyatt and then plunges forward for extra yardage.
Boutte catches another long one from Wyatt late in the game to give his team a chance at victory. This competion went for 39 yards to the La Porte 4.
Memorial's Reggie Turner darts 33 yards with a swing pass early in the game. Turner had to leave the game when hit out of bounds. He did not return.
Memorial's Nicholas Hernandez (42) wraps up La Porte's Victor Holmes for no gain.
Memorial's Aaron Robinson zeroes in on La Porte's Britt Grant (24).
Wyatt drops back and unloads for Acosta, who carries down close to the La Porte goal in the second quarter.
La Porte's Victor Holmes snares a 25-yard TD pass from Jordan Jackson with 11 seconds left in the first half.
La Porte's Grant breaks through the Memorial line only to confront Thomas Gamez, who made the tackle.
Boutte locks in on a pass from Wyatt over the middle in the second quarter.
La Porte's Jahvey Mark cuts up the middle of the field and darts 22 yards to the end zone on a third-quarter screen pass. Holmes scores from 6 yards out in the fourth quarter to give the Bulldogs a 22-21 lead.
La Porte defenders Hoza Scott (20) and Malik Graves (22) race in to block a 20-yard field-goal try by Tara Cole that would have given Memorial the lead with just over four minutes to play.

TEXAS INVITATIONAL: New Champ, Same Coach as Duncanville Wins |
SMUGMUG On-Line for this Event: CLICK HERE Too hot to handle: Duncanville's Nasser Issa (30) and Matthew McQuiad (3) battle with DeSoto's Julian Green (32) for control of a loose ball.
Although the McDonald's Texas Invitational hasn't had a repeat Boys Division 1 Gold champion in six year, the tournament now has a repeat coach. Danny Henderson, who accepted the title trophy a year ago with Flower Mound Marcus, reprised the role on Saturday night after his new team, the Duncanville Panthers, edged DeSoto, 52-47, for the Gold championship at Phillips Field House. Duncanville senior Jerami Grace scored 15 points while teammate Omar Sherman added a handful of key rebounds and free throws during a game-deciding, four-minute stretch of the fourth quarter. The Panthers forged a crack in the deliberately paced contest with a nine-point run that gave them a 44-34 lead with 3:50 to play. DeSoto, the 2010 tournament champion, managed to close the gap to one. But with 30 seconds left, Sherman grabbed a key defensive rebound off a miss by DeSoto star Matt Jones. Sherman drew a foul and sank both free throws. Jones, who'll play for Duke next year, led all scorers with 21 points. Davontae Bailey added 10 points to the Duncanville cause. Duncanville also won the girls championship -- and this time it was a team repeat. The Pantherettes, tournament champs in 2011, walloped Bellaire 63-31 in the title game Saturday afternoon. Among Pasadena ISD schools, South Houston's boys team had the best tournament showing. The Trojans beat Sharyland, 61-57, on Saturday to claim the consolation trophy in the Division 2 Silver bracket. The Trojans finished 3-2 in the tournament.

TEXAS INVITATIONAL: Mavs' Gold Title Hopes Derailed in Overtime |
SMUGMUG On-Line for this Event: CLICK HERE Memorial's Jacob Gonzalez hangs in the air and scores from the lane while College Park's Jayden Holden tries to defend.
Memorial High's upstart berth in the Boys Division 2 Gold field of the McDonald's Texas Invitational came to a startling end on Friday, the victim of a buzzer-beater shot and 60-56 overtime loss to College Park at the Memorial gym. The Cavaliers' Jayden Holden dropped in a picture-perfect 3-pointer from the top of the key as the regulation buzzer sounded. That tied the game at 51-51 and reversed the Mavericks' second-half momentum. College Park took a quick lead in the overtime period and salted away the victory. Memorial crashed the Gold bracket on Thursday by going 1-1 in pool play games and claiming a point differential tie-breaker. Holden led the Cavaliers with 16 points. Memorial's Anthony Crist led all scorers with 16 while teammates Jesse Houston and Justin Dubrin added 10 and 11 points, respectively. South Houston, the only other Pasadena ISD boys team to avoid an 0-2 pool play record, bowed to Richardson Pearce 43-40 in a Division 2 Silver contest at the Trojans' gym. The Trojans bounced back to beat Houston Chavez 81-80 and will play in the Division 2 consolation championship on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Sam Rayburn. South Houston will face Sharyland. Two tournament favorites, DeSoto and Duncanville, will battle for the Boys Division 1 Gold title at 8:30 on Saturday night at Phillips Field House. The game will be nationally televised on FOX College Sports. The girls teams from Duncanville and DeSoto will tangle in a Girls Division 1 Gold semifinal Saturday morning. FOOTBALL: North Shore Bounces Dobie from Playoffs |
SMUGMUG On-Line for this Event: CLICK HERE Sophomore Joe Gonzalez, starting his first game at quarterback for Dobie, escapes from pressure applied by North Shore's Kwame Vaughn.
The Dobie Longhorns cast an eye to the future even as they were being cast aside in the state playoffs by powerful North Shore, a 48-7 first-round winner Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Justin Green rushed for 146 yards and Micah Thomas fired two short touchdown passes to Kevian DeLeon as the Mustangs sidelined the Longhorns with a 5-6 season record. North Shored scored TDs on its first six possessions and led 34-0 at the half. Dobie, plagued by key personnel losses, started a new quarterback, sophomore Joe Gonzalez, listed as a defensive back and little used this season. Gonzalez showed excellent quickness both inside and outside, but the Longhorns had no passing component to bank on. Gonzalez attempted only seven passes and completed just one. Junior Tyler Wolfe, Dobie's quarterback for much of the season, replaced Gonzalez late in the game and scored the Longhorns' only TD, a one-yard run with just over three minutes remaining. North Shore, now 10-1, rolled up 519 yards of offense, 430 of it on the ground. Gonzalez was impressive early in the game. At one point, he bolted for a first down on a fourth-and-8 play in North Shore territory. The Longhorns, however, lost the ball on a fumble on the next play. The Mustangs broke the game open with 20 points in the second quarter with DeLeon scoring on TD tosses of 6 and 4 yards from Thomas, who earlier scored on a 42-yard run. The Mustang quarterback attempted only four passes, competing three of them.
Thomas breaks loose on a 42-yard TD run late in the first quarter.
Dobie defenders Darien Childs (39) and Jordin Harrison (30) combine to haul down North Shore's Justin Green after a short gain.
Gonzalez fires a pass downfield for Adoniz Thomas but a bit too far. The ball slipped off Thomas's fingers.
Longhorn defenders Carlos Gonzales (44) and Jonathan Jones (99) stack up North Shore's Jared Pendleton for a loss inside the Dobie 5-yard line.
Thomas gets off a pass while under pressure from Dobie's Quinton Bolling (48). North Shore's Derrick Gillis hauled in the pass for a long gain close to the Dobie goal-line. The play set up the Mustangs' first score.
Thomas finds running room through the heart of the Dobie defense.

WEEK 10: Texans Edge Eagles in Pride Bowl Thriller |
SMUGMUG On-Line for this Event: CLICK HERE Sam Rayburn quarterback Francisco Jimenez (top) unloads a 46-yard pass to Ramon Trevino (bottom) in the first quarter. Pasadena's Noel Martinez (12) hauled Trevino down at the Eagles' 19-yard line.
Jonathan Murillo caught a 67-yard touchdown pass for his team's first points, but it was his 5-yard TD scamper in the fourth quarter that lifted Sam Rayburn to a 35-28 victory over rival Pasadena High at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday night in a competitive and thrilling season finale for both schools. After combining for 49 points in the first half, the two teams went silent offensively in the third quarter. Early in the fourth, the Eagles tied the game on a 2-yard TD pass from Nick Bernal to Tray Williams. The Texans promptly marched the other way and reclaimed the lead for good on Murillo's TD run. The victory allowed Sam Rayburn to maintain possession of the Pride Trophy, which goes to the winner of the annual rivalry contest. The Texans finished the season with a 4-6 record and a 2-5 mark in District 22-5A action. The Eagles failed to post a victory in their 10 games this season. The contest was one of only three in 22-5A play this season to be decided by seven points or less. Memorial plays host to Alvin on Saturday in the final regular-season contest for 22-5A schools. The Mavericks have already clinched a playoff spot, but Dobie can make the playoffs only if Memorial beats Alvin. The Yellowjackets can claim the final playoff berth if they prevail over the Mavericks. That would eliminate the Longhorns. Sam Rayburn quarterback Francisco Jimenez sparked the Texans' victory with his best game of the season. Jimenez had a hand in his team's first four TDs. After connecting with Murrillo from 67 yards out, he ran 22 yards for the Texans' second TD. In the second quarter, he launched two TD strikes to Ramon Trevino, one of 60 yards and the other of 48 yards off a trick play. Jimenez completed only six of 10 passes, but accounted for 160 yards through the air and another 90 on the ground. Pasadena quarterback Nick Bernal completed 19 of 29 passes for 231 yards. He threw three TD passes but was intercepted three times. Williams hauled in a 38-yard TD strike, the first of his two TD grabs. Bernal gained 116 yards on the ground on 19 carries. The Eagles scored first in dramatic fashion. Chris Cerda blocked a Texans punt and recovered the ball in the end zone for a TD.
Pasadena wide receiver Tray Williams makes a sensational, one-handed grab of a Nick Bernal pass for a first down.
Pasadena's Chris Cerda (5) greets teammates -- and Sam Rayburn players leave the field dejected -- after Cerda blocked a punt and recovered it in the end zone for the first points of the game.
A strange play that even the Sam Rayburn cheerleaders couldn't figure out: The Texans' Ramon Trevino streaks 48 yards to the end zone after catching a Francisco Jimenez pass on a trick play. In a set position at the line of scrimmage, the Texans snapped the ball as soon as the officials put it in play, catching the Eagles off guard.
Sam Rayburn's Jonathan Murillo leaves dust as he bolts 67 yards on a pass from Jimenez for the Texans' first points.
Pasadena's Tray Williams turns on the jets as he races 38 yards to the end zone after snagging a pass from Nick Bernal.
Bernal sets up in the pocket and fires for a first down in the second quarter.
Texans quarterback Francisco Jimenez darts 22 yards for a TD late in the first quarter.
Pasadena's Kristian Castillo is greeted by a host of Sam Rayburn defenders after catching a pass.
Sam Rayburn's Ramon Trevino hits the fast lane on his way to a 60-yard TD on a pass from Jimenez.

WEEK 10: Late Field Goal Saves Mavs, Ushers Dobie into Playoffs |
SMUGMUG On-Line for this Event: CLICK HERE Memorial's Ahrmon Mcleod sheds a would-be tackler from below and lays a stiff arm to another as he storms close to the goal line midway through the second quarter. Mcleod scored on the next play.
A 37-yard field goal by Memorial senior Pedro Lopez with six seconds left in the game provided the Pasadena ISD with a double victory on Saturday, one for the playoff-bound Mavericks and another for playoff-anxious Dobie. Lopez's field goal snapped a tie and gave the Mavericks a 27-24 victory over comeback-minded Alvin at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Yellowjackets committed a costly pass interference penalty with 10 seconds left in the contest, and what had looked like a sure overtime situation came down to Lopez's kick. It effectively booted Alvin out of the playoffs and opened the door for Dobie. The Mavericks and Longhorns joined champion Manvel and runner-up Pearland in the District 22-5A playoff field. With a remarkable 8-2 record to show for Chris Quillian's first season as head coach, Memorial will take on La Porte in first-round playoff action next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Abshire Stadium in Deer Park. Dobie, 5-5, will battle North Shore in first-round action next Friday night at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Memorial led Alvin 14-10 at halftime and again after a scoreless third quarter. Memorial's Reggie Turner opened the scoring in the wild fourth quarter with a 25-yard touchdown run. Tara Cole tacked on a 31-yard field goal to give the Mavericks a 24-10 lead. But the Yellowjackets bounced back on an 18-yard TD pass from Aaron Jackson to Sidney Gonzalez. Then, with 3:16 left to play, Alvin's Corey Jackson returned a punt 56 yards for the tying TD. Memorial got a rushing TD each from Turner, Ahrmon Mcleod and quarterback Jordan Wyatt. But it was Wyatt's running that kept the Yellowjackets in a spin. The senior gained 135 yards on 17 carries and opened the scoring with a 20-yard burst. Mcleod scored on a 9-yard run later in the half. Memorial's defense held John McDowell, Alvin's standout rusher, to just 77 yards on 18 carries.
Memorial defenders Nicholas Hernandez (42) and Alex Cruz (54) upend Alvin running back John McDowell.
Mcleod avoids a tackler at the goal line and plunges into the end zone to complete a 9-yard run in the second quarter.
Alvin quarterback Aaron Jackson flees the pocket en route to a winding 21-yard TD run late in the first half.
Wyatt stays one step ahead of Alvin pursuer Abe Fernandez and launches a pass in the first quarter.
Tacking tackles on tackles, Memorial defenders Caesar Benavides (61) and Daniel Resendez (55) catch up with Jackson after a short run.
A host of Memorial tacklers bring down Alvin's Chris Shepherd short of a first down. Chipping in are Thomas Gamez (15), Aaron Robinson (11), Nicholas Hernandez (42) and Reggie Turner (3).

WEEK 10: Oilers Top Dobie, Treat Mavs to Playoff Clincher |
SMUGMUG On-Line for this Event: CLICK HERE Dobie quarterback Tyler Wolfe goes airborne to complete a first-down pass early in the game.
The Dobie Longhorns saw their hopes of riding a five-game winning streak into the state playoffs collapse under the weight of fumbles and penalties as Pearland cashed in on short-field opportunities for a 42-0 victory Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Oilers victory enabled Memorial High to clinch a state playoff spot for the seventh consecutive season, a record for any Pasadena ISD school. Dobie, which had won four straight, left its playoff chances hanging on the outcome of a Saturday contest between the Mavericks and Alvin. Should Memorial win, the Mavericks would claim sole possession of third place in the final District 22-5A standings and Dobie would take fourth. A Yellowjackets victory would leave Alvin, Memorial and Dobie all tied for third place. A comparative score tie-breaker would then be applied, which would eliminate the Longhorns. Dobie picked up only eight first downs against the Oilers, the district's top defensive unit. The Longhorns trailed by just a 14-0 margin after a first half that could have been played on even terms except for Dobie mistakes. The Oilers maintained constant pressure behind twin quarterbacks Jake Garner and Kalen Johnson. Pearland completed 17 of 22 passes in the game. Garner was intercepted by Dwight Tucker in the first quarter on a badly thrown pass, but the Longhorns failed to move the ball. Later in the half, Garner was picked off by Joe Gonzalez, but the interception was wiped out by a pass interference ball. Dobie's big break of the half was a completion from Tyler Wolfe to Kalon Bailey that appear to convert a fourth-and-15 dilemma in Pearland territory. But Bailey fumbled after the reception and the Oilers recovered. JaColbie Butler raced 38 yards for the game's first score early in the first quarter. But Dobie's defense held Pearland in check until the final three minutes of the half when Garner scored on a two-yard run. Short TD runs by Hayden Cole, as well as a blocked punt, fueled the Oilers' breakaway second-half effort. Dobie now stands 5-5 for the season with its playoff fate unresolved. Pearland goes into the playoffs with an 8-2 mark.
Pearland quarterback Jake Garner scores his team's second TD on a two-yard run late in the second quarter.
Dobie's Dwight Tucker picks off an errant pass by Garner (9).
Longhorn defender Jonathan Jones hauls down Oilers receiver Trey Smith deep in Dobie territory in the second quarter.
Dobie running back Adonis Thomas looks for room to roll .
Hauled down by Pearland defenders John Gibberman (6) and Justin Phillips (19), Wolfe tries to stretch out the ball for a first down.
Dobie's Brandon Terrell hits the deck after being chased down by three Pearland defenders.
Bad luck for the Horns: After catching a pass to convert a fourth-and-15 hurdle, Dobie's Kalon Bailey fumbles the ball as he is hit by Pearland's Emry Flanagan. The Oilers recovered the ball.
More bad news for Dobie: Joe Gonzalez intercepts a Garner pass in the second quarter. The play was wiped out by a defensive pass interference call.
Which way did he go? Pearland's Rasheed Davis cuts inside of Dobie's Dwight Tucker after catching a short pass.
Gonzalez drags down Pearland tight end Jake Crain two yards short of a TD in the second quarter. Garner scored on the next play.

WEEK 9: Mavs' Ground Game Grinds Up Trojans' Upset Bid |
SMUGMUG On-Line for this Event: CLICK HERE Memorial's Ahrmon Mcleod prepares for a goal-line collision with South Houston linebacker Peyton Polk during second-quarter action.
Reggie Turner ran for 213 yards Friday night and led a Memorial ground stampede that wiped out South Houston's early upset designs and sparked a 66-33 victory that moved the Mavericks a step closer to their seventh straight state playoff berth. The Trojans, fueled by a 360-yard passing effort from James Davis, seemed intent on matching the Mavericks touchdown-for-touchdown until South Houston's thin defense collapsed in the fourth quarter. Ahead by just a 31-26 count going into the final quarter, the Mavericks piled up 35 points. Turner scored his only two TDS in the quarter, one on a 54-yard run and the other a 53-yarder. Now 7-2 overall and 5-2 in district play, the Mavericks can lock up a playoff berth with a victory over Alvin on Nov. 10 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The only real scenario for the Mavericks to miss out on the playoffs would be for Dobie to upset Pearland next Thursday and for Memorial to lose to Alvin two days later. Such a scenario would leave Memorial and Alvin tied for fourth place - behind Dobie -- with the Yellowjackets holding the head-to-head tie-breaker. Memorial would likely have the advantage in a three-way tie for third place with Dobie and Alvin because of a comparative score edge. Even if Dobie loses to Pearland, the Longhorns will still make the playoffs if Memorial beats Alvin. Davis completed 17 of 29 passes with four going for TDs - all to Trayveon Rhone, who piled up 266 yards on seven catches. Davis was not intercepted in the game. Rhone caught a 31-yard TD pass from Davis in the second quarter. He added another 31-yard TD grab in the third quarter and then stung the Mavericks with TD receptions of 85 and 60 yards. His last TD cut Memorial's lead to 38-33 with 10:38 left in the game, but that's where the Trojans' upset hopes died. The Mavericks scored the final 28 points of the game with quarterback Jordan Wyatt, Turner and Ahrmon Mcleod all supplying TDs. All three topped the 100-yard mark as Memorial rolled up 565 of their 693 total yards on the ground. Turner's 213 yards came on 17 carries. Mcleod piled up 170 yards on 16 carries. Wyatt added 114 yards on 11 carries. South Houston fell to 2-7 for the season and 1-5 in district play with a finale against district champion Manvel next Friday night on the road.
Ahrmon Mcleod scores his team's first points on a six-yard TD run in the first quarter.
Memorial linebacker Andrew Garza trips up Trojan quarterback James Davis.

WEEK 9: Horns Bounce Texans for Third Straight Victory |
SMUGMUG On-Line for this Event: CLICK HERE Dobie freshman D'vaughn Pennamon heads for open space on a 28-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Sam Rayburn safety Evan Coronado gives chase.
Varsity newcomers Adoniz Thomas and D'vaughn Pennamon combined for 296 yards rushing and four touchdowns as the Dobie Longhorns took another step toward locking down a state playoff spot with a 49-17 victory over Sam Rayburn on Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Longhorns broke the game open with four unanswered TDs in the second half, one a 63-yard run by Thomas, a junior. Pennamon, a freshman, scored another on a 62-yard gallop. Both players were only recently pressed into varsity service because of a shortfall of available Dobie running backs. Now 5-4 overall and 4-2 in District 22-5A action, the Longhorns could secure a fourth-place finish and a playoff spot even if they lose to favored Pearland in their regular-season finale next week. Should Memorial beat South Houston Friday night, Dobie's hopes would likely rest on the outcome of the Memorial-Alvin matchup on Nov. 10. Twin victories by the Mavericks to close the season would launch Memorial into the playoffs as the No. 3 team and Dobie as the No. 4. But a victory by Alvin over the Mavericks on Nov. 10 could bump Dobie from post-season play as the result of a comparative score tie-breaker. Dobie beat Alvin 20-17 earlier in the season but is saddled with a 32-7 loss to Memorial. The Longhorns' victory over Sam Rayburn, their third straight in district action, was fueled by strong quarterback play from junior Tyler Wolfe and a defense that shut down the Texans' big-play capabilities after the first quarter and shut out Sam Rayburn in the second half. The Texans, eliminated from playoff contention with a 1-5 district mark, scored first on a 2-yard TD run by LaTrone Williams. Dobie answered with a 42-yard TD scamper by Wolfe. Sam Rayburn quarterback Francisco Jimenez matched that with a 65-yard TD romp as the Texans took a 14-7 edge. But that's when Dobie's young backs went to work. Pennamon raced in from 28 yards out early in the second quarter and Thomas followed with a 4-yard TD run. Sam Rayburn got a 40-yard field goal by Samson Tamijani to keep Dobie's lead at a fragile 21-17 at halftime. But barely a minute into the second half, Thomas broke free on his 63-yarder. Early in the fourth, Dwight Tucker returned a Texans punt 78 yards for another TD. Pennamon piled on his 62-yarder and backup quarterback Kevin Caballero added a 4-yard TD run in the waning minutes. Thomas finished with 156 yards rushing on only 10 carries. Pennamon chalked up 139 yards on 13 carries.
Sam Rayburn running back LaTrone Williams eludes the grasp of Dobie's Joe Gonzalez (top) on a 23-yard scamper in the first quarter, but he can't dodge the shoulder of Jessy Cedeno (23), who knocks Williams out of bounds at the Texans' 2-yard line (bottom).
Dobie's Adoniz Thomas put on the brakes before getting knocked to the turf by Sam Rayburn's Felipe Buendia (14) near the Texans' goal.

WEEK 8: Pearland's Picks Point to Mavericks' Demise |
SMUGMUG On-Line for this Event: CLICK HERE
Memorial quarterback Jordan Wyatt scrambles for yardage as Pearland defenders Ryan Griswold (99) and Ronnie Fraser (55) close in.
Pearland's stout defense intercepted three Memorial passes Friday night, paving the way for a 45-16 Oilers victory that sets up a District 22-5A championship showdown next week featuring the two teams expected to finish on top of the district heap when the season began. Oilers quarterback Jake Garner had a hand in three touchdowns, running two yards for the game's first score and then throwing a pair of TD passes to Kevin Washington in the third quarter. The Oilers will play host to Manvel next Friday night with the district title at stake. Both teams are 7-1 for the season and 5-0 in 22-5A play. The Mavericks, 6-2 overall and 3-2 in district play, remain on track for one of the district's four state playoff berths. Memorial closes the regular season with games against South Houston and Alvin. Those two teams, both 1-3 in district play, meet on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Veterans Memorial Stadium. Memorial managed an early 7-7 tie with Pearland. Taking advantage of good field position from a Statue of Liberty kickoff return, the Mavericks marched to a 1-yard TD run by quarterback Jordan Wyatt. But Pearland answered with a bit of trickery -- a faked punt that kept alive a drive capped by a 2-yard TD run by Hayden Cole. An interception by Pearland's Marlon Walls set up an third Oilers score before the end of the first quarter, a 3-yard run by Cole. Memorial posted a 38-yard field goal by Alex Cruz and cut Pearland's lead to 21-10 at halftime. But Garner responded with third-quarter TD passes of 27 and 36 yards to Washington. Late in the fourth quarter, Devonte Dotson picked off a Wyatt pass and returned it 70 yards for a TD. Memorial's Reggie Turner, the district's top rusher going into the game, answered with a 42-yard TD for the game's final points. Turner gained 89 yards on 16 carries, but Garner contributed 93 on the ground and 134 through the air to keep Pearland's offense on the move.

SMUGMUG On-Line for this Event: CLICK HERE South Houston senior Trayveon Rhone leaps over Alvin's Devon Molina to haul in a 24-yard touchdown pass from James Davis, the Trojans' first score of the game.
Alvin's John McDowell rushed for 324 yards - 167 of it on three long touchdown runs in the first half - as the Yellowjackets raced by South Houston 42-17 at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday in a survival contest for playoff contest. With the Trojans beset by turnovers and ball-handling problems, McDowell exploded for a 47-yard TD in the first quarter and two 60-yarders in the second quarter to launch his team to a 20-0 lead. Alvin, now 3-5 overall, improved to 2-3 in District 22-5A play, once game behind Memorial and Dobie, currently in a third-place tie at 3-2. South Houston fell to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in district. The Trojans cut Alvin's lead to 20-7 at halftime on a 24-yard pass from James Davis to Trayveon Rhone. Midway through the fourth quarter, Rhone caught a 15-yard TD pass from Byron Hodges. South Houston's victory hopes were spoiled by six turnovers. The Trojans lost four fumbles, including two that wrecked early scoring threats. Davis was intercepted twice. The Trojans only other points came on a 42-yard field goal by Uriel Cardenas early in the second half. Alvin quarterback Aaron Jackson tossed a pair of TD strikes in the second half, one a 6-yard strike to Eric Olszewski and the other a 10-yarder to Sidney Gonzalez.

Dobie rolled out fresh reserves in freshman running back D'Vaughn Pennamon and sophomore quarterback Kevin Caballero. Pennamon rushed for 42 yards, half of it coming on a TD run in the second quarter that helped lift the Longhorns to a 21-0 lead. Caballero threw a 27-yard TD pass to Darrius Simmons late in the fourth quarter.
Now 3-2 in District 22-5A play, the Longhorns can wrap up a playoff berth as one of the district's top four teams by beating Sam Rayburn next week. Dobie evened its season record at 4-4. The Eagles remained winless at 0-5 in district play and 0-8 overall. Bailey, who carried 14 times for his 100 yards, opened the scoring with a 46-yard TD run midway through the first quarter. The Eagles retrenched but buckled midway through the second quarter. Dobie quarterback Tyler Wolfe scored on a 24-yard scamper up the middle. Not quite two minutes later, Pennamon scored from 21 yards out. The Eagles bounced back and sliced the deficit to 21-7 at halftime on a 16-yard TD pass from Nick Bernal to David Lopez. Otherwise, Dobie kept a tight rein on Pasadena's passing game. Bernal completed 13 of 27 passes for 98 yards and was intercepted twice. The Eagles gained only 13 yards on the ground. Jesus Cantu kicked an 18-yard field goal for the Eagles in the third quarter, but Dobie pounced with three more TDs, the first on a 2-yard run by Bailey early in the final quarter. WEEK 7: Mavs Tackle Texans; Revived Dobie Dumps Alvin |
SMUGMUG On-Line Photos for this Event: CLICK HERE Memorial's Reggie Turner finds a clear path to the end zone on a 34-yard TD run late in the first half .
The Memorial Mavericks used two first-half interceptions for field position and big plays for points in brushing aside Sam Rayburn 45-13 at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday night and strengthening their grip on a state playoff berth. Dobie, meanwhile, revived the Pasadena ISD's hopes for at least two playoff teams with a mild road upset of Alvin. The Longhorns cashed in an early fumble return and two second-half field goals by Chris Salazar for a 20-17 victory over the Yellowjackets. Memorial now stands 6-1 for the season and 3-1 in District 22-5A action with a contest against district co-leader Pearland coming up next Friday at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Dobie, 3-4 overall, evened its district mark at 2-2 and stayed in strong contention for at least a fourth-place finish and a playoff spot. Memorial jumped to a 28-0 halftime lead on the Texans with the help of two touchdown runs by Reggie Turner, the first a 5-yard burst and the second a 34-yard sprint with 2:11 left in the half. The Mavericks got a 13-yard TD run from Gabe Medillin to kick off the scoring. The backbreaker for Sam Rayburn was Memorial's third score, a 38-yard bomb from quarterback Jordan Wyatt to Adrian Boutte, left all alone deep down the right sideline. Memorial's Ahrmon Mcleod broke free on a 75-yard RD run late in the third quarter. Tara Cole converted all six Memorial PAT tries. She also tacked on a 20-yard field goal early in the second half. Down 45-0 in the fourth quarter, the Texans avoided a shutout when Francisco Jimenez found Ramon Trevino for a 13-yard scoring strike. The two hooked up again in the final two minutes from nine yards out. Dobie jumped to a 7-0 lead on Alvin when Austin Hicks returned a fumble 30 yards for a TD midway through the first quarter. Down 14-7, the Longhorns forced a tie at halftime when Kelton Bailey scored from four yards out. The second half turned into a field-goal duel, which the Longhorns won 2-1. Pasadena defensive end Jose Chavez (92) lowers the boom on Pearland's Carlos Thompson in second-quarter action.
Manvel's Shane McCarley fired seven touchdown passes -- all in the first half -- as the Mavericks remained unbeaten in District 22-5A play with a 70-3 blitz of Pasadena on Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. McCarley needed slightly more than the opening quarter to spot his prime receiver, Carlos Thompson, three times for TDs. Thompson opened the scoring with a 55-yard TD pass and followed that with a 38-yard TD reception. After McCarley closed out the first quarter with a 45-yard TD strike to Reggie Hemphill, he found Thompson again, this time for a 15-yard TD toss, just 34 seconds into the second quarter. McCarley wrapped up the first half with TD strikes to Koda Martin, Kwandre Wilson and Qyalan Clay, the last a 55-yard bomb. Hemphill hauled in an 80-yard bomb from reserve Stefan Kahn in the fourth quarter -- the Mavericks' eighth passing TD in the context. The Eagles' only points came on a 43-yard field goal by Alfedo Garibay in the second quarter. The Mavericks collected six interceptions off Pasadena quarterback Nick Bernal, who completed 22 of 46 passes for 201 yards. Manvel quarterbacks passed for 488 of the Mavericks' 545 total yards. Thompson totaled 180 yards on six catches. The Mavericks, now 6-1 for the season, will take a 4-0 district mark into their game next week against Sam Rayburn, their final contest before an anticipated district showdown against Pearland on Nov. 2. WEEK 6: Despite Alumni Fanbase, Trojans Fall to Texans 21-23 |
Texans' Chris Jaime takes a tumble against the Trojans defense after getting the Texans a second down.
Junior LaTrone Williams rushed for 167 yards and scored three touchdowns Saturday night to power a Sam Rayburn ground attack that lowered the pulse of South Houston's high-powered passing attack and carried the Texans to 23-21 victory over the Trojans at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Williams, playing both running back and quarterback, scored twice in the first quarter as the Texans, aided by an early safety, jumped to a 16-0 first-quarter lead. South Houston fought back with the help of two James Davis TD passes, one a 42-yard strike in the second quarter and the other a 6-yard toss to Trayveon Rhone in the third. Ahead by a slender 16-14 count going into the fourth quarter, the Texans mounted a 75-yard drive capped by Williams' third TD of the game, a 3-yard run. South Houston threatened to reclaim the TD and climb back to within two points, but a goal-line interception by the Texans' Nick Galvan ruined the drive. Just as abruptly, the Texans fumbled the ball back, and the Trojans capitalized on a 1-yard run by Davis with 4:27 left. Still ahead by two points, Sam Rayburn unleashed its ball-control ground game to run out the clock. The Texans used the victory to snap a seven-game losing streak against South Houston and even their record at 3-3. The Trojans, despite the support of a homecoming crowd, fell to 2-4. Both schools are 1-2 in District 22-5A action. Sam Rayburn piled up 304 rushing yards and attempted only two passes in the contest. Davis completed 17 of 29 passes for 182 yards and gained 112 yards on the ground on 18 carries.

WEEK 6: Mavs Tame Eagles for Homecoming Victory |
Memorial's Thomas Gamez gets ready to break through the Eagles defense.
Memorial's Reggie Turner, the leading rusher in District 22-5A, played the role of clutch receiver on Friday night as Memorial raced by Pasadena 56-28 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Turner caught three touchdown passes from Jordan Wyatt in the first half as the Mavericks helped themselves to a merry Homecoming victory while raising their season record to 5-1. Memorial is 2-1 in district play. Pasadena remained winless this season. Wyatt threw four TD passes in all and ran for two more. Memorial led 28-7 after one quarter and 42-7 at halftime. Eagles quarterback Nick Bernal also threw four TD passes, three of them to Uriel Hill. Bernal completed 24 of 49 passes for 445 yards. Hill caught nine passes for 170 yards. Metrelle Taylor also snagged nine passes for the Eagles, good for 111 yards and one TD. Wyatt's TD tosses to Turner covered 32, 3 and 15 yards. Turner ran three yards for a fourth TD. The teams combined for 1,045 yards of total offense and 40 first downs. Memorial rolled up 577 yards and did not punt. Manvel, meanwhile, used five TD passes by Shane McCarley to blitz short-handed Dobie 48-0 in Manvel. The Longhorns, playing without starting quarterback Daryl Edwards and leading rusher Patrick Hurst, collected only 156 total yards and nine first downs. McCarley completed 19 of 23 passes for 275 and was not intercepted. Dobie fell to 2-4 for the season and 1-2 in district play.

WEEK 5: Trojans Top Eagles Behind Davis Air Blitz |
SMUGMUG On-Line Photos for this Event: CLICK HERE In perfect stride and on their way to the end zone, South Houston's twin receiver threats, Elton Dyer (12) and Toree Daniel (20), play escort for the football on a 55-yard TD strike to Dyer from Trojan quarterback James Davis near the end of the first quarter.
South Houston quarterback James Davis rang up five touchdown passes on Saturday night, but the most important catch for the Trojans in a 47-27 victory over Pasadena didn't come from an offensive player. The winless Eagles jumped to a 7-0 lead with the help of the first of four TDs credited to their quarterback, Nick Bernal. The Pasadena senior threw for three scores and ran seven yards for the game's first points. He completed 27 of 44 passes for 403 yards. But any hopes Pasadena had of Bernal controlling the pace of the game were dashed on the Eagles' next series when South Houston's Roman Sustania intercepted a Bernal pass and returned it 16 yards for the Trojans' first TD. Although the turnover didn't exactly wake up the Trojans' defense, it brought South Houston's offense to life, through the air and on the ground. Bernal tried to make amends with a 13-yard TD strike to Francisco Rodriguez that helped hike the Eagles' lead to 14-6. But South Houston exploded for five TDs over the next 12 minutes to take a comfortable 40-14 halftime lead. The Trojans used the victory to spoil Pasadena's Homecoming game and atone for a 26-21 upset loss to the Eagles last season. South Houston is now 1-1 in District 22-5A play and 2-3 overall. The Eagles fell to 0-2 and 0-5. From the final minute of the first quarter into the second minute of the second half, the Trojans put on an incredible show. Davis ignited it with a 55-yard TD pass to Elton Dyer with 50 seconds left in the first quarter. Exactly a minute into the second quarter, Davis found Dyer again for a 38-yard TD strike. Barely a minute after that, Davis broke free on a 58-yard TD run. Barely two minutes after that, Davis hooked up with Trayveon Rhone for a 29-yard score. With 1:24 left in the half, Davis spotted Dyer again, this time for a 9-yard TD strike. And just 68 seconds into the second half, Davis found Toree Daniel for a 6-yard TD toss. Davis completed 13 of 25 passes for 297 yards. Trailing 47-14, the Eagles fought back with two more Bernal TD passes, a 6-yard strike to Tray Williams late in the third quarter and a 64-yard strike to Metrelle Taylor with 3:55 left in the game. The teams combined for 1,046 yards -- 545 for the Trojans and 501 for the Eagles. South Houston's ability to move the ball on the ground compounded problems for Pasadena's beleaguered defense. Byron Hodges led the Trojans' ground attack with 132 yards on 18 carries. Davis added 79 yards on seven carries. Dyer caught five passes for 139 yards and Rhone cashed in five passes for 109 yards. The Eagles had two 100-yard receivers, as well. Taylor caught six passes for 131 yards and Williams 10 for 139.
Pasadena quarterback Nick Bernal heads for the end zone on a 7-yard TD run for the game's first points.
South Houston's Roman Sustatia (50) races down the sideline ahead of Eagles offensive lineman Abraham Rios (51) on a 16-yard interception return for a TD and the Trojans' first points. Sustatia's joyful teammates, Miguel Elizondo (42) and Osvaldo Garcia (3), follow the play.

WEEK 5: Mavs Dominate Dobie, Clear Path to Playoffs |
SMUGMUG On-Line Photos for this Event: CLICK HERE Memorial's Reggie Turner sets sail for the end zone on a 45-yard touchdown run barely one minute into the game.
Junior Reggie Turner rushed for 200 yards to lead Memorial to a 32-7 thumping of the Dobie Longhorns at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday night that allowed the Mavericks to lay an early claim to supremacy among Pasadena ISD football squads for 2012. Memorial's victory spoiled Dobie's hopes for a homecoming victory, but the importance of the game is likely to be felt as the district's four playoff spots come into focus over the next five weeks. The Mavericks improved their record to 4-1 for the season and 1-1 in district play, their loss coming last week to front-running Manvel. Dobie is also 1-1 in district play, but has yet to play either Manvel or the other district co-favorite, Pearland. The Longhorns fell to 2-3 overall and now face a two-week stretch -- against Manvel next Friday and then Alvin on Oct. 19 -- in which their playoff prospects will likely be determined. Both games are on the road. Turner set the pace for the Mavericks with a 45-yard touchdown run barely a minute after the Longhorns failed to surprise Memorial with a game-opening onside kick. Turner supplied the only points of the second half with a 3-yard TD run, extending his team's 32-7 halftime lead. Dobie's defense couldn't handle the inside quickness or outside speed of Turner, who carried 19 times for his 200 yards. Memorial quarterback Jordan Wyatt also burned the Longhorns on the corners. Wyatt rushed for 75 yards on 14 carries. Dobie's lone TD came on a 32-yard pass from Daryl Edwards to Kelton Bailey, one of four TDs by both teams in the first quarter. The Longhorns completed only five of 15 pass attempts and posted just 196 total yards to 376 for the Mavericks. Patrick Hurst led Dobie's ground game with 58 yards on 15 carries.
Memorial quarterback Jordan Wyatt (left) lofts a pass to tight end Dorian Johnson (45), who rambles 23 yards to help set up the Mavericks' second TD.

WEEK 5: Texans No Trouble for Pearland's Tough Defense |
SMUGMUG On-Line Photos for this Event: CLICK HERE Sam Rayburn's defense, led by Jose Perales (34), breaks up a pass intended for Robert LaChuisa (12).
Pearland quarterback Jake Garner sprinted to the end zone three times in the first half, then retired to the sideline to watch the Oilers' defense muzzle Sam Rayburn Thursday night in a 63-0 victory for the visitors at Veterans Memorial Stadium. It was the second rough outing in a row for the Texans against a new face in District 22-5A. Last week Sam Rayburn fell to Alvin by a similar score of 63-7. Pearland is now 4-1 for the season and 2-0 in district play. The Texans slipped to 0-2 in district play and 2-3 overall. Pearland's defense pitched its third shutout in its last four games. The Oilers held the Texans to just 70 total yards and only four first downs, including just one in the first half as Pearland was racing to a 49-0 halftime lead. Garner scored Pearland's first two TDs on runs of 10 and 3 yards in the first six minutes of the game. His 37-yard scamper midway through the second quarter helped lift the Oilers to a 35-0 lead. A Sam Rayburn fumble in the final minute of the half was scooped up by Pearland defensive back Marlon Walls and returned 40 yards for the Oilers' seventh TD. The Texans did not cross midfield until the fourth quarter. Junior LaTrone Williams provided nearly half of Sam Rayburn's offense with 32 rushing yards on 24 carries.
Pearland's Justin Phillips makes a juggling interception of a Sam Rayburn pass in the first quarter. His return set up the Oilers' second TD.
Pearland quarterback Jake Garner leaps over a pileup near the goal-line to score from three yards out in the first quarter.
The Oilers' Hayden Cole gets a block from teammate Robert LaChuisa and cuts inside for a 6-yard TD run late in the opening quarter.

Pep Rally Honors Heroes of Jackson's 1952 Championship Team |
SMUGMUG On-Line Photos for this Event:

Jackson Intermediate Principal Paula Sword accepts a 1952 letter jacket presented to the school by Larry Early (center) and Richard Maxwell (right). The jacket belonged to the late Teddy Early, a member of the Wildcats' 1952 championship team.
Jackson Intermediate students took a trip back in time on Wednesday -- back 60 years -- back before their parents and many of their grandparents were born. Back to when their school wasn't even named Jackson Intermediate.
The Wildcats held a boisterous and often emotional pep rally to honor members of Jackson Junior High's 1952 championship football team, six of whom were in attendance, as was the team's coach, Harry Morgan.
Paula Sword, Jackson's principal, gladly accepted a letter jacket worn by the late Teddy Early, a member of 1952 squad. His teammate, Richard Maxwell, choked up as he told the students about his friendship with Early and how he arranged, following Early's death last year, to have his widow donate the jacket to the school.
Early's younger brother, Larry, was also on hand for the jacket presentation.
Bill Newcomb, who played on the 1952 team, addressed the students about the importance of discipline, character and leadership in any winning endeavor.
"Our leader was Harry Morgan," Newcomb said. "And he's sitting right here."
Morgan, who'll turn 87 next week, smiled at the response from the students. Morgan went on to serve as an assistant football coach at Pasadena High and in 1957 became the first head coach in the history of South Houston High School.
Newcomb, the third head coach in South Houston history, went on to become director of athletics for the Pasadena ISD. Students listened intently as Newcomb spoke of the value of friendship.
"You will make friends here and those friendships will last your whole life," he said. "These guys are a testament to that. We love each other like we were brothers."
Players from the 1952 team in attendance were Maxwell, Newcomb, Curtis Cooper, Claude Pace, Buddy Boydston and David Sadler. All except Boydston went on to play on Pasadena's High outstanding teams of the mid-1950s.
Jackson's football teams went unbeaten in both 1951 and 1952, a time when ninth-grade football was played at the junior-high level and opponents included junior highs from Galena Park to Galveston.
Jackson, the oldest of the Pasadena ISD's intermediate schools, is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.

WEEK 4: Horns Tame Trojans Behind Air, Ground Assault |
SMUGMUG On-Line Photos for this Event: CLICK HERE Dobie's Patrick Hurst gets outside of South Houston's Hector Flores to complete a 12-yard scamper to the end zone on a first-quarter pass from Daryl Edwards.
Dobie quarterback Daryl Edwards upstaged South Houston's potent aerial attack with three touchdown passes that helped lift the Longhorns to a 37-14 victory over the Trojans Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium in the District 22-4A opener for both schools. Edwards was one of three Longhorns to post more than 100 rushing yards in the contest. Kelton Bailey led the way with 166 yards on 15 carries. Half of Edwards' six completions in the contest went for TDs. On the game's second play from scrimmage -- following a Trojan muff of the opening kickoff -- Edwards teamed ith Bailey for a 28-yard scoring strike. Following a lost fumble on the Trojans' first snap, Edwards winged a 12-yard TD pass to Patrick Hurst as Dobie raced to a 13-0 lead. The Trojans' defense, shelled for 173 points in three non-district games, finally dug in, holding the Longhorns scoreless for the next 18 ½ minutes. Edwards ended the Dobie drought with a 5-yard TD run with 1:57 left in the first half as the Longhorns took a 20-0 lead at intermission. The teams traded punches in the second half . Kalon Bailey helped Dobie open up a 27-0 lead with a 58-yard TD run in the third quarter. The Trojans, who drove to the Dobie goal-line in the first half but failed to score, finally got on the board on a 50-yard pass from James Davis to Torre Daniel late in the third quarter. After a 23-yard field goal by Dobie's Josue Villata, Davis found Trayveon Rhone for a 68-yard TD strike. Edwards then tacked on the final TD with a 47-yard pass to Christopher Gougis. The Longhorns, now 2-2 for the season, piled up 562 yards - 458 of them on the ground. Hurst posted 134 yards rushing on 22 carries. Edwards rolled up 124 yards on 15 carries. Wet conditions from a pre-game shower hurt South Houston's chances to synchronize an effective passing game and the Trojans, now 1-3, couldn't compensate on the ground. Dobie's defense limited South Houston to just 50 rushing yards on 25 carries. Dobie proved to be the only Pasadena ISD team to get through the first week of district play unscathed. Sam Rayburn and Pasadena were beaten on the road against 22-5A newcomers. Alvin surprised the Texans with a 63-7 thumping. Pearland shut down the Eagles 63-0. Memorial fell to Manvel on Thursday night 34-17.

WEEK 4: Manvel's 5A District Debut Dents Memorial's Perfect Start |
SMUGMUG On-Line Photos for this Event: CLICK HERE
Memorial defensive back Adrian Boutte eludes the grasp of Manvel's Cory Klingler and completes a 36-yard TD return after his first-quarter interception. TheTD helped give Memorial a brief 7-0 lead.
Memorial High brought the fire to Manvel's Class 5A baptism at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Thursday night but the saavy newcomers to District 22-5A survived on the flame-throwing arm of an asbestos quarterback. Manvel senior Shane McCarley fired two touchdown passes and ran for a third TD to lead his team to a 35-14 victory over previously unbeaten Memorial in a battle of Mavericks and the season's first encounter between 22-5A foes. Memorial made McCarley pay dearly for an early mistake -- a first-quarter pass that Adrian Boutte intercepted and returned 36 yards for a touchdown. But Manvel, a state finalist last season in Class 4A, methodically took control of what was its first district contest in the 5A ranks. Qyalan Clay ran 7 yards in the second quarter for the tying TD. McCarley then connected twice with his senior receiver, Carlos Thompson, for a pair of scores. The two hooked up from 12 yards out late in the first half and again from 16 yards out midway through the third quarter as Manvel slipped to a 21-7 lead. Memorial counted with a 14-yard TD run by Reggie Turner, but Clay scored again, this time from 26 yards out early in the fourth quarter. McCarley sealed it with an 11-yard TD run with 2:42 left in the game. McCarley completed 23 of 36 passes for 345 yards. Thompson caught eight passes for 134 yards and Kyrion Parker added another 112 yards on six receptions. Manvel rolled up 514 total yards, but the visitors were slowed considerably by 12 penalties. Memorial was limited to 226 yards, only 55 of which came through the air, the result of only four completions in 22 attempts. Manvel picked off three Memorial passes. Turner rushed for 66 yards on 16 carries.

WEEK 3: Texans Celebrate Homecoming by Toppling Northbrook |
SMUGMUG On-Line Photos for this Event: CLICK HERE

Sam Rayburn's Chris Jaime races up the sideline on a 35-yard return of the second-half kickoff. The Texans scored on the next play to open up a 17-0 lead.
With two touches of the football Friday night, Sam Rayburn turned a game of inches into a measurable mismatch. Senior Chris Jaime returned the second-half kickoff 35 yards and quarterback Ernie Martinez hooked up with Jonathan Murillo on a 30-yard TD strike that sparked the Texans to a 30-7 Homecoming victory over Northbrook in the final non-district tuneup for District 22-5A teams. The Texans, 2-1 for non-district play, slipped to a 10-0 halftime lead on a second-quarter TD plunge by LaTrone Williams and 40-yard field goal by Samson Tamijani late in the half that cleared the bar by about a foot. But Sam Rayburn needed only the first 15 seconds of the second half to take firm control. Jaime fielded the second-half kickoff and raced up the right sideline to the Northbrook 45, the Texans earning 15 more on a personal foul. Martinez, making his first start at quarterback, then fired to Murillo on the right sideline. The junior wide receiver dashed into the end zone untouched. Williams contributed 140 yards rushing on 24 carries and scored three TDs. Northbrook, 2-1 for the season, got on the scoreboard on a 13-yard run by Elijah Dupas with 7:47 left in the third quarter. But Williams countered with fourth-quarter TD runs of 1 and 25 yards. The Texans will open District 22-5A play next Friday at Alvin. The other four Pasadena ISD high schools completed non-district play last week and will start district action next week. At halftime, Felipe Buendia, Sam Rayburn's cornerback and kicker, was crowned Homecoming King. Tonya Morales was voted Homecoming Queen.

WEEK 3: Trojans Survive Points Leak; Eagles Not So Lucky |

Texas City linebacker Avery Fuller hauls down Pasadena quarterback Nick Bernal but not before Bernal was able to dart for a first down late in the first half.
DICKINSON - South Houston's Uriel Cardenas followed up 14 combined touchdowns over four quarters with a solitary 37-yard field goal in overtime Friday night that carried the Trojans to a wild 52-49 victory over Dickinson. The Trojans used their seven TDs - and Cardenas's clutch kick - to overcome another generous defensive performance. The Pasadena Eagles were not as fortunate. Texas City rolled up seven TDs in the first half alone in routing the Eagles 68-0 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Both teams will have defensive deficiencies on their minds the next two weeks as they prepare for their District 22-5A openers. The Trojans, who have surrendered 173 points in a 1-2 start, will face Dobie on Sept. 28. The Eagles, who have allowed 140 points in an 0-3 start, face Pearland on the road on Sept. 28. Texas City's Andrew Allen, D'Vonta Hinton and Armanti Foreman took turns scoring back-to-back TDs against the Eagles in the first half. Allen, playing quarterback, teamed with Foreman for TD completions of 6 and 56 yards. Adrian West capped the half by returning a Pasadena punt 89 yards for another Stingarees score. More surprisingly, Texas City completely turned off the Eagles' early-season passing potency. Pasadena senior Nick Bernal, who passed for 787 yards in the Eagles' first two games, was held to three completions (in 15 attempts) and 15 yards. South Houston's James Davis lit up the Dickinson defense with a 28-of-42 passing performance, good for 442 yards and three TDs. Torre Daniel caught eight passes for 115 yards. Elton Dyer caught five for 117 yards, 49 coming on one TD reception early in the second quarter. Davis also ran 23 times for 71 yards. His 2-yard plunge with 2:35 left in regulation sent the game to overtime. The teams were tied at the end of each quarter: 14-14 after the first, 28-28 at halftime, 35-35 at the end of the third quarter and 49-49 at the end of regulation.

Memorial junior Reggie Turner helps set up the first of the Mavericks' four second-quarter touchdowns with a first-down dash in Channelview territory. Justin Acosta (29) provides the lead block.
CHANNELVIEW -- Memorial High quarterback Jordan Wyatt led his team to four touchdowns in the second quarter -- scoring two of them himself -- as the Mavericks capped off a perfect non-district schedule with a 49-12 romp over Channelview on Friday night. Wyatt joined forces with teammate Reggie Turner for nearly 300 rushing yards, three times Channelview's team total.
Turner piled up 173 yards on 19 carries and scored twice. Wyatt ran 12 times for 125 yards, including a 78-yard scamper late in the first quarter to set up the game's first score -- a 7-yard TD run by Turner.
Wyatt launched the second-quarter Memorial explosion with a 18-yard TD burst. The Falcons countered with a 47-yard TD run by Matthew Williams. Channelview didn't get back in the end zone until the final minute of the game.
Ahead 14-6, the Mavericks bolted to a 35-6 halftime edge with three TDs in the final six minutes of the first half. Adrian Boutte scored from 9 yards out, Turner from 53 and Wyatt again from the one.
In the third quarter, Wyatt found Justin Acosta for a 41-yard TD strike, one of only three Memorial completions in the contest. Boutte finished up the Mavericks' TD binge with a 7-yard run.
Tara Cole knocked through all seven PAT kicks for Memorial.
The Mavericks will take their 3-0 record into District 22-5A play beginning Sept. 27 at home against Manvel. All seven of Memorial's district games will be played at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Dobie's Patrick Hurst sets sail for the sideline en route to a 13-yard touchdown run and the game's first points.
LEAGUE CITY - Clear Falls senior J.P. Lowery rolled up 197 yards rushing and contributed two touchdown runs to a spirited second rally that carried the Knights to a 24-12 victory over the Dobie Longhorns on Thursday night. The Longhorns scored their dozen points in the first half only to see Clear Falls chalk up two dozen in the second half. The bulk of the Knights' rally came after they lost their starting quarterback, senior Dylan Collins, to an apparent knee injury late in the third quarter. With junior Alex Assarian taking snaps, Clear Falls proved unstoppable the rest of the way. The Longhorns will take a 1-2 record into the start of District 22-5A play against South Houston in two weeks. Dobie senior Patrick Hurst, who rushed for 79 yards on 12 carries, gave the Longhorns a 6-0 lead with a 13-yard TD burst midway through the opening quarter. Early in the second quarter, Dobie's Kelton Bailey scored from six yards out. The Longhorns failed to score on both conversion tries and had a short field-goal attempt blocked later in the first half. Clear Falls, now 2-1, got a 31-yard field goal from Carson Muscat early in the third quarter. The Knights then turned the game over to Lowery, who scored from two yards out in the final minute of the third quarter and tacked on a 22-yard TD burst early in the fourth. The Knights put the game away on a six-yard TD run by Brandon Hayward with 4:17 remaining. Lowery's 197 yards came on 32 carries. Pasadena High senior Nick Bernal served up 332 yards through the air and fired three touchdowns, but the Eagles found no solution to Waltrip's big-play offense Saturday night in a 41-34 loss to the Rams at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Bernal, who threw for 460 yards in the Eagles' season-opening loss to Spring Woods, ran twice for TDs and tried to keep his team on pace with the Rams with his three TD tosses. The Pasadena senior hooked up with Uriel Hill on a 73-yard strike that enabled the Eagles to force a 13-13 tie late in the first half. Bernal teamed with Metrelle Taylor on an 8-yard TD pass early in the fourth quarter and with David Lopez on a 19-yard strike with 2:37 left in the game as the Eagles pulled to within seven points. Pasadena got the ball back on a fumble recovery in the final two minutes, but Bernal was intercepted on a fourth-down play deep in Waltrip territory by Rams defensive back Micah Lemond. All five of Waltrip's offensively produced TDs came on plays of at least 25 yards. Running back Jimmy Mouton had the night's biggest gallop, an 88-yard run for the Rams' first score. Waltrip quarterback Cristian Rodriguez threw four TD passes, the longest a 68-yard strike to Chris Maloney early in the fourth quarter that helped lift the Rams to a 41-20 lead. The teams' combined 75 points were all scored in the final three quarters.

La Porte junior Johnathan Lewis piled up 174 rushing yards on only 13 carries and scored half of his team's eight touchdowns Friday night as the Bulldogs easily put away South Houston 55-21 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Sam Rayburn, meanwhile, saw its bid for a 2-0 record erased by a 24-point fourth-quarter explosion by Baytown Lee in a 31-13 home victory for the Ganders.
La Porte raced to a 34-7 lead at halftime before tacking on two more TDs in the third quarter. Lewis scored all four of his TDs consecutively. The first came on a 17-yard pass from Jordan Jackson late in the first quarter.
Jackson followed that with three TD runs, a pair of 3-yard bursts wrapped around a 75-yard dash on the first snap of the second half.
All three South Houston TDs came on passes from quarterback James Davis. Toree Daniel caught TD strikes of 8 and 80 yards in the fourth quarter. Elton Dyer collared the first, a 5-yard toss in the first quarter.
Davis completed 26 of 37 passes for 316 yards. Daniel caught 10 passes for 197 yards.
The Bulldogs collected 573 yards of total offense, 453 of it on the ground. The Trojans rolled up 412 total yards.
Sam Rayburn held a 13-7 lead on Baytown Lee going into the fourth quarter before the Ganders poured on the points. Josh Zellars scored twice on runs of 7 and 15 yards to launch Baytown Lee's comeback.
The Texans found the end zone on a 1-yard run by LaTrone Williams in the second quarter and a 50-yard run by Francisco Jimenez in the third.
Pasadena closes out the weekend schedule for Pasadena ISD schools on Saturday when the Eagles face Waltrip in their home opener. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Memorial High backfield mates Ahrmon Mcleod, Reggie Turner and Jordan Wyatt each ran for a touchdown in the first quarter as the Mavericks jumped to a commanding lead and then withstood a Clear Lake rally for a 36-27 victory on Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Mavericks used the victory to post their first 2-0 mark since 2005.
Dobie, meanwhile, stormed into the victory column with 26-14 victory over Clear Springs in League City. Daryl Edwards, starting at quarterback for the first time, ran for 134 yards and tossed a 1-yard TD pass to Patrick Hurst for the game's first score.
Memorial jumped to a 22-0 first-quarter lead on a 5-yard TD run by Mcleod, a 17-yard TD burst by Reggie Turner and a 37-yard TD romp by Wyatt, the Mavericks' senior quarterback. A quarter-ending safety helped Memorial compensate for two early conversion failures.
Wyatt tacked on a 17-yard TD pass to Adrian Boutte late in the first half. But Memorial's 29-6 lead at intermission was nearly erased by the Falcons, who scored the next 21 points.
The Mavericks needed another TD pass by Wyatt -- this one a 29-yard toss to Turner with 1:59 left in the game -- to seal the outcome. Both teams were stymied by penalties (115 in all) and turnovers, three for the Falcons and two for Memorial.
The Longhorns, who lost to Atascocita in their season-opener, subdued Clear Springs with a strong running game and impressive run defense. Clear Springs was limited to only 14 yards rushing while Dobie posted 273 of its 289 total yards on the ground.
Edwards ran for 134 yards on 24 carries. Hurst backed him with 76 yards on 19 carries.
The Longhorns doubled their 6-0 halftime lead midway through the third quarter when Dwight Tucker returned a punt 59 yards for a TD. Clear Springs quickly reclaimed the score on a fumble recovery by Matt Cody.
Dobie put the game away with two TDs in less than two minutes of the fourth quarter. Hurst scored on a 1-yard run and teammate Joe Gonzalez followed with a 31-yard scoring burst.

Mcleod muscles his way into the end zone from five yards out for Memorial's first TD.

A young fan signals 'touchdown' as Reggie Turner dashes into the end zone for a 17-yard score and an early 12-0 lead for the Mavericks.

SATURDAY UPDATE: Pasadena High quarterback Nick Bernal fired four long touchdown passes, but it wasn't enough to save the Eagles from a 31-27 season-opening loss to Spring Woods at Tully Stadium. Bernal completed 19 of 40 passes for 400 yards. The Eagles senior hit Metrelle Castillo for TD strikes of 66 and 30 yards. Bernal teammed up with Francisco Rodriguquez for scoring strikes of 65 and 37 yards.
Luck escaped the Dobie Longhorns and no trend developed for the South Houston Trojans on Friday night as both schools failed to match the winning ways of their Pasadena ISD brethren from the evening before.
Dobie, a playoff favorite in District 22-5A, kicked off the 2012 season with a quick touchdown before stalling out in a 31-6 loss to Atascocita at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
South Houston succumbed to an aerial blitz by Humble Summer Creek's Aaron Sharp that included six touchdown passes and 330 yards in a 69-28 blowout for the Bulldogs. The Trojans' defense gave up seven TDs total through the air.
For Pasadena ISD schools, Friday's action proved an about-face from Thursday's openers that featured victories by Memorial and Sam Rayburn. Pasadena wraps up the first weekend of action on Saturday with a 6 p.m. contest at Spring Woods.
Dobie cashed in an early fumble recovery for a short drive and a 2-yard TD run by senor Patrick Hurst less than four minutes into the game. But even though the Longhorns recovered two more fumbles in the contest, the Eagles dominated the rest of the way.
Atascocita scored 24 points over a 16-minute span leading up to halftime. Quarterback Grant Ashcraft threw for one score and Elijah Merchant added two more on runs of 8 and 19 yards. Daniel Higdon booted a 33-yard field goal on the final play of the half to give Atascocita a 24-6 lead at intermission.
Ashcraft ran 22 yards early in the third quarter for the only TD of the second half.
Kelton Bailey led the Longhorns with 48 yards rushing on 11 carries. Hurst finished with 42 yards, also on 11 carries. Ashcraft completed 20 of 24 passes for 241 yards.
James Davis, South Houston's new quarterback, had a hand in three TDs. He scored on a short run early in the game and later threw two TD passes, one of 50 yards to Elton Dyer and another of 25 yards to Uriel Cardenas.

Tyler Wolfe, Dobie's junior quarterback, fires downfield in the second quarter.

Atascocita's Greg Campbell hits a roadblock after after catching a pass in the first quarter.

Both Sam Rayburn and Memorial High treated new head coaches to victories in their debut games as the 2012 high-school football season got under way across the state. The Texans broke in both new Coach David Satcher and a new playing surface at Veterans Memorial Stadium with a 30-27 victory over New Caney Porter. Junior LaTrone Williams rushed for 101 yards and scored twice for Sam Rayburn.
The Mavericks provided a winning debut for Coach Chris Quillian with a 33-7 rout of Fort Bend Clements at Mercer Stadium. Reggie Turner burned the Rangers for 218 on the ground and tacked up Memorial's first score of the season on a 4-yard run less than two minutes into the game.
Memorial rolled up 402 yards of offense, led 30-0 at halftime and carried a shutout into the final five minutes. A 2-yard run by Demarcus Cobb with 4:45 left finally put Clements on the scoreboard.
Memorial quarterbacks Jordan Wyatt and Thomas Gamez each tossed a TD pass, Wyatt connecting with Justin Acosta from 10 yards out in the first quarter and Gamez hitting Gabe Medillin from 28 yards out last in the second quarter.
Mavericks running back Ahrmon Mcleod carried only once in the game, but that 12-yard burst helped cap a 23-point first quarter for Memorial. Tara Cole added a 19-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Sam Rayburn overcame center-quarterback exchange problems all night, primarily with the help of a quick 16-0 getaway.
The Texans used a pair of early interceptions for a field-position edge that led to a 9-yard TD run by Williams barely two minutes into the game and then a 25-yard field goal by Alexis Manjarrez. A 5-yard TD run by Chris Jaime early in the second quarter gave Sam Rayburn a 16-0 lead.
Three times the Spartans closed the gap to three points, but an 11-yard TD run by quarterback Francisco Jimenez with 5:58 left effectively put the game away.

Sam Rayburn High's volleyball team helped launch a new school year of athletics competition on Tuesday with a 3-0 victory over Galena Park at the Texans Gym. The Lady Texans prevailed in three tight sets: 26-24, 25-21, 25-23. Sam Rayburn seniors Sam Lang and Kasie Mahaney led the way with five kills each. Taylor Ladner paced Galena Park with nine kills. Dobie, Pasadena, Memorial and South Houston also opened their seasons. Memorial lost to Aldine McArthur while South Houston fell to Texas City, both on the road and both by 3-0 scores. Dobie dropped a pair of matches at home -- to North Shore, 3-0, and to Elkins, 3-1.
