Mark Wilkes, the "Omega Man" visited Stuchbery this week to perform feats of strength and to talk to students about the dangers of bullying. More than 175 students at Stuchbery celebrated Mardi Gras recently with a Book Float Parade, a tradition that began last year. Students assembled shoebox floats based on favorite-book themes. Event photos follow.

Brian Hoang emerged as the winner of the Stuchbery Spelling Bee held last Wednesday (Jan. 12). Irene Kim took runner-up honors. Brian will compete in the district elementary spelling bee on Feb. 8 The two are pictured below.

Stuchbery counselor Tina Jo Flotten's band of merry elves entertained their younger schoolmates again this year with a read-aloud session of Christmas books. The elves (in reality, third- and fourth-graders at Stuchbery) earn their elf caps by demonstrating good behavior. Each year they read alound to students from Pre-K through the second grade. Stuchbery students Mia Parades and Jeffrey Sullivan-McCall (pictured below) recently won a drawing for free books among students who participated in the library's Gingerbread Book Character project. Marcia Fisher, Stuchbery's librarian, held the drawing at the completion of the project.

Stuchbery's "Bee A Giver" program resulted in more than 300 books being donated by Stuchbery students. School counselor Tina Jo Flotten, who launched the drive, has encouraged Stuchbery students to share with less fortunate children. Three Stuchbery students submitting winning essays in the Kuk Sool Pasadena writing contest and received a year of free instruction at the martial arts school. Winners (pictured below with Kuk Sool instructor Michael Wixson and lead instructor Jason Franklin) are Daniel Milam, Sadie Hodges and Adrian Perez.

Stuchbery first-grader Jasmine Bachman received a bit more than just positive feedback recently for her hard work in class. Stuchbery Principal Jackie Salisbury rewarded Jasmine by curling her hair, as the photos below show.

Stuchbery hosted its Family Math Night for students and their families. Each student was provided ready-made activities to take home. They also participated in Math Vocabulary BINGO. Stuchbery opened its doors for local veterans as part of its Veterans Day observance this week. A reception was held at the school and afterward students had the opportunity to interview their guests. Vanessa Raymond, a student teacher at Stuchbery, was left a bit wide-eyed during a recent lesson. To begin, Raymond told the class, "One, two, three... eyes on me." The students happily complied. They got out of their seats and posted paper "eyeballs" all over their teacher. The photo tells the story.
