DEER PARK - La Porte point guard Tori Wise scored 10 points to lead a furious fourth-quarter rally that lifted the Lady Bulldogs to a 48-44 victory over South Houston in the opening round of the girls state basketball playoffs on Monday night.
In an earlier state playoff opener played at Deer Park South, Dobie fell to powerful North Shore 55-30.
The Lady Trojans, competing in the playoffs for the first time in 10 years, surrendered a 10-point lead going into the final quarter, falling victim to a turnover extravaganza that marred the efforts of both teams to take control of the game.
A co-champion in District 22-5A, South Houston committed 41 turnovers in the contest. The Lady Bulldogs posted another 28.
Akira DeCoud led the Lady Trojans with 19 points, saving seven for the fourth quarter. She was the only South Houston player to score a field goal in the quarter.
South Houston led from the opening minute up until the 3:44 mark of the fourth quarter when La Porte tied the game at 41-41. The Lady Trojans had led 36-26 at the end of the third quarter.
With just under three minutes left, Wise nailed a 3-pointer to give the Lady Bulldogs a 44-41 lead. A half-minute later, after another South Houston turnover, La Porte guard Elise Rodriguez scored on a layup to push the Lady Bulldogs' lead to five.
DeCoud answered with a drive to the hoop for a 3-point play. After La Porte failed to capitalize on a one-and-one opportunity, the Lady Trojans had the chance to tie the game in the final seconds. An errant pass to the baseline - South Houston's 43rd turnover of the game -- ruined the chance.
Rodriguez then sealed it with two free throws.
Jasmine Lopez added 10 points to the Lady Trojans' cause. Wise finished with 16 points while Rodriguez added 14.
Dobie trailed North Shore by a thin 20-17 margin at halftime before the Lady Mustangs blew the game open with an 18-4 run in the final quarter.
Jazmin Guerrero led the Lady Longhorns with 11 points while Shanequa Gaston added 10. Courtney Williams paced North Shore with 22 points.
Girls playoff action for Pasadena ISD teams continues on Tuesday night when Memorial takes on Port Arthur Memorial at Barbers Hill High School. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
