CHESS: Sam Rayburn's Martinez Wins District Tournament

  Sam Rayburn senior Angel Martinez captured first place in the Second Annual Pasadena ISD Chess Tournament held last Saturday at Beverly Hills Intermediate.
  Sam Rayburn senior Evaresto Ramirez took second. Pasadena High senior Rene Benitez and Beverly Hills eighth-grader David Ho tied for third place.
  Ngoc Phan, a sixth-grader at Melillo Middle School, won the Grade 5-7 Division. Tying for second were Mauro Lermo and Taylor Nguyen, both seventh-graders at Beverly Hills. Two Milstead Middle School sixth-graders -- Nathan Chapa and Jose Galindo -- tied for fourth.
  The competition was open to students in Grades 5-12. Students from two high schools, one intermediate school, four middle schools and one elementary school competed. Nineteen students competed in the Grade 8-12 Division, while 33 students battled it out in the Grade 5-7 Division.
