Recently, 50 students and five teachers participated in Pasadena Memorial's First Annual Rugged Race as part of the Coordinated School Health/CATCH Program. Second through fourth graders at Gardens have participated in the New York Road Runners Association's Mighty Milers Program for the past two years.
The Mighty Milers program promotes running and healthy living by providing encouragement and incentives for children meeting specific running milestones. Once a child completes a total marathon distance of 26.2 miles, they receive a Mighty Miler Marathon medal. Each time they complete running an additional 26.2 miles they receive additional medals. After completing 35 miles, students receive a Mighty Milers t-shirt.
Gardens students have embraced the Mighty Milers Program running each Monday through Thursday and to date, have accumulated a total of 20,432 miles this year. Gardens CATCH Committee sponsors the top 50 runners who were able to complete two miles or more in a 27-minute time frame. Participating students met at the school for a pep rally and took a bus to Memorial to participate.

Gardens' youngest participant Esperanza Garza preps for the races.
