STUCHBERY ES PHOTO: Fourth Grade Reading Team Ready for District Competition |
On May 19, the Stuchbery fourth grade will compete against other elementary school teams in the district's "Name That Book Competition". Students were required to read books from a list of 20 to be eligible to compete. During the competition, teams will be given a quote from one of those books and they will be required to provide the book's name. The teams with the most points will advance to the next round. STUCHBERY ES PHOTO: SPC Andrew Waller Makes Surprise Visit to Fourth Grade Class |
On February 27, SPC Andrew K. Waller made a surprise visit to Stuchbery. The students in Mrs. Bryan's fourth grade class have been writing to SPC Waller's 170th Infantry Division, 1-84 Field Artillery unit in Afghanistan this year. Students were excited to see the soldier that had been receiving their letters and enjoyed hearing some stories. SPC Waller wishes to thank the students and teachers for all their support. They will deliver items parents bring into school such as lunch kits, folders and backpacks to their respective classrooms. STUCHBERY ES PHOTO: Lam Claims School Spelling Bee Title |
Stuchbery Elementary held the school spelling bee on January 10, 2012. There were 23 third and fourth grade participants. This year's winner was Thao Lam. Runner-up was Nicholas Salinas. Thao will represent Stuchbery at the Elementary District Spelling Bee on February 7th at Sam Rayburn High School Auditorium. Event photo follows.

Second grade students in Mrs. Shirley Young's class recently saw science in motion with a class experiment using toy cars. The students measured the length of each traveling car and discussed the force that allowed the car to move down the ramp. The lesson focused on the basics of force and motion. Event photo follows.

STUCHBERY ES PHOTO: Students Donate Over 900 Pounds of Food to Humane Society |
Stuchbery faculty and families collected dog and cat food this past week to raise money for the Brazoria County Humane Society. Over 900 pound of dog and cat food will be donated to the cause. Along with the food donation, students also collected medical supplies, toys and bedding for animals. Event photo follows.

STUCHBERY ES PHOTO: Students Learn to 'Bee a Giver' |
Recently, the students at Stuchbery were encouraged to bring any book from home to donate to needy school-aged children. Students who particpated received their name on a bee and it was posted on the Bee a Giver tree in recognition of that child's donation. These books were donated to a local Houston-area school. STUCHBERY ES PHOTO: Pre-K Students Get Tangled in Science |
Pre-K teacher, Mrs. Liavette Peralta and her intern, Mrs. Hermelinda Correa recently completed a unit about spiders and
wanted students to see how hard spiders have to work to make their web. Students used white yarn to demonstrate how to make a human web and allowed each student to hold on to a piece and pass it to whoever they wanted in the circle until everyone was holding on to a piece of the yarn. Students were able to see different shapes and sizes within the web. Event photo follows.

STUCHBERY ES PHOTOS: Students Stick It To Bullying |
Sensei Joseph Cantu and his stepdaughter, Alyx Bridwell recently visited Stuchbery students to raise awareness of bullying in schools. Cantu and Bridwell also reenacted different scenarios for students to see how to deal with bullies. Cantu, a former World Champion Martial Artist and U.S. Air Force Veteran, holds black belts in multiple styles of martial arts. He also tours nearby school districts as a motivational speaker and author. In 2001, he founded the non-profit organization Sexual Crime Outreach for Texas teens, for which he was recognized by the U.S. Congress. Currently presiding as the President of Cantu Martial Arts & Fitness, LLC, he believes that by raising awareness, bullying in schools can be reduced. "I believe that with zero tolerance for fighting in schools and more education, a safer learning environment can be the norm," Cantu said.

Juliana Moreno & Jaelyn Chapmen, pictured below, have been chosen to be the "Stuchbery Runners" for the 2011-2012 school year. Both girls are in Ms. Lauren Nalepa's fourth grade class. They will help the office deliver lunches, backpacks, homework and other items brought in by parents to the classrooms twice a day.
