  UPDATES FROM THE TEXAS INVITATIONAL

  SATURDAY
  9:56 p.m. --
The Texas Invitational has a new champion. Marcus Smart scored 21 points to lead Flower Mound Marcus to a 55-42 victory over defending tournament champ DeSoto.
  9:31 p.m. --
Tough luck for the Memorial boys, who lose to Sharyland in the Division 2 Bronze title game.
  8:19 p.m. --  Dobie boys
fall, 45-40. Christian Sanders scores 20 for the third game in a row.
7:56 p.m. -- Girls Division 1 play is complete. Defending champ Cy-Falls salvaged third place in Gold with a 56-48 victory over Mansfield Summit.
7:52 p.m. -- Turnover woes return. Dobie boys down 37-31 to start the final quarter.
7:36 p.m. -- The Flower Mound Marcus-DeSoto marquee game may not be the last one of the day. Tipping off at roughly the same time -- the Memorial boys and Sharyland for the Division 2 Bronze title. Play at the South Houston gym is running about 90 minutes behind schedule.
7:35 p.m. -- The Sam Rayburn boys grab third place in Division 2 Bronze by beating defending district champ South Houston, 66-54, on the Trojans' home court.
7:27 p.m. -- Sophomore Christian Sanders scores six points for Dobie in the second quarter as the Longhorns pull to within 24-23 at the half.
7:07 p.m. -- The Dobie boys, turnover-plagued, trail 16-7 after the first quarter against Atascocita.
6:16 p.m. -- Although all the Pasadena ISD girls teams have finished, four of the four boys teams are still suited up. Dobie will play Atascocita at the Sam Rayburn gym in about 20 minutes for the Division 2 Silver title. Sam Rayburn and South Houston are playing now for third place in Division 2 Bronze at the South Houston gym. After that game, Memorial will tangle with Sharyland for the Division 2 Bronze trophy, same gym.
4:53 p.m. -- Chalk up a title for the Memorial girls team. The Lady Mavs beat Dickinson 35-34 to win the Division 2 Bronze trophy.
  3:19 p.m. --
The tournament has a new girls champion. Duncanville beat Clear Springs, 78-71, in the title game.
1:42 p.m. -- The Pasadena boys used their extra game to claim a tournament victory. Trailing by double digits early, the Eagles beat Galena Park, 69-63.
12:12 p.m. -- The South Houston girls pulled within five points in the fourth quarter but fell to La Porte, 58-48, in the Division 2 Silver semifinals.
11:44 a.m. -- Nice comeback by the South Houston girls in the third quarter. The Lady Trojans closed to within nine, but still trail La Porte, 44-33, going into the final quarter.
11:14 a.m. -- South Houston's attempt to get to the Girls Division 2 Silver title game has hit a La Porte roadblock. The Lady Trojans trail 40-23 at halftime.
11:06 a.m. -- No all-Pasadena ISD final in Girls Division 2 Bronze. Sam Rayburn fell to Dickinson, 56-46, in the semifinals, missing a chance to meet Memorial for the championship. Dickinson and Memorial will collide at 1:30 p.m. at South Houston.
10:56 a.m. -- No repeat for the Cy-Falls girls. Duncanville advanced to the Division 1 Gold title game with a 58-47 victory. Clear Springs beat Mansfield Summit, 59-52, in the other morning semifinal. The title game is 1:30 p.m. at Phillips.
10:47 a.m. -- The Memorial girls will be playing for the Division 2 Bronze title at 1:30 p.m. at South Houston. The Lady Mavs beat Cy-Ridge 44-35 in the semifinals this morning.
5:45 a.m. -- DeSoto, paired against Flower Mound Marcus in the boys title game, will try to become the first winner of back-to-back Texas Invitational titles since Kingwood strung together five straight from 2002 through 2006.
  5:32 a.m. --
An eventful day for the tournament and an eventful day -- possibly -- for Pasadena ISD basketball. TV production trucks will be arriving at Phillips Fields House for what is thought to be the first national telecast from the facility. And the school district could experience its best finish by one of its teams in seven years. Since Dobie won the girls championship in 2004 (16 girls teams then with no divisions), no district school has ever won a title at the Silver level or higher. The Dobie boys have a chance today to win in Division 2 Silver. The South Houston girls will start play in the Division 2 Silver semifinals.

  FRIDAY
  8:44 p.m. --
The dream matchup has materized. Defending tournament champion DeSoto will play defending Class 5A state champion Flower Mound Marcus for the Texas Invitational title on national TV from Phillips Field House on Saturday night. Marcus put away San Antonio Warren, 74-65, in the semifinals while DeSoto was disposing of Fort Bend Bush, 74-65.
7:08 p.m. --  The Dobie boys' opponent in the Division 2 Silver title game will be Atascocita, a 51-36 winner over Crosby.
6:41 p.m. -- No all-Pasadena ISD championship game in Boys Division 2 Bronze. Memorial got there with a 57-53 victory over Sam Rayburn. But South Houston fell to Sharyland 61-56. The Trojans made it to the Division 2 Silver title game last year.
6:34 p.m. -- Dobie boys win 76-57. They'll play for the Division 2 Silver title against either Crosby or Atascocita at 6 p.m. on Saturday at Sam Rayburn HS.
6:01 p.m. -- South Houston earned the biggest Saturday marquee for Pasadena ISD girls teams, but you have to credit Memorial for trying. The Lady Trojans nipped Houston Yates 58-55 to finish 2-1 in pool play and move into the Division 2 Silver semifinals. The Lady Mavs also finished 2-1, but when La Porte knocked off Deer Park on Saturday, a three-way tie resulted and the tie-breaker dropped Memorial to the Bronze. The Deer still made the Gold bracket. The Lady Trojans face La Porte in the semifinals at 10:30 a.m. in their home gym.
5:47 p.m. -- The Dobie boys were well on their way to reaching the Division 2 Silver championship game. The Longhorns had a 20-point lead on Houston Chavez near the end of the first half.
5:07 p.m. -- The Cy-Falls girls continue to look good for a repeat. The Lady Eagles pounded DeSoto 76-55 to land in the Division 1 Gold semifinals.
3:35 p.m. -- In Boys Division 2 Bronze, Sam Rayburn, South Houston and Memorial all won quarter-final matches today. The Texans and Mavericks are under way at Phillips Field House in one semifinal. The Trojans are taking on Sharyland at Memorial High in the other semifinal. The bronze title game is Saturday at 6 p.m. at South Houston High. There's a strong possibility of an all-Pasadena ISD final.
  3:27 p.m. --
Dynamite semifinals in store at 6 p.m. in Boys Division 1 Gold. Favorite Flower Mound Marcus advanced with a 47-27 victory over Langham Creek. The Mauraders will play highly regarded San Antonio Warren, a 75-73 winner over North Crowley. The contest is at Memorial High. Defending tournament champ DeSoto will play Fort Bend Bush at Dobie. DeSoto nudged Richardson Berkner 67-64 and Bush put away San Antonio Clark.
  12:25 p.m. --
The Dobie boys withstood a flurry of catch-up fouls by Flower Mound and advanced to the Division 2 semifinals with an 88-83 victory. Christian Sanders scored 20 points and came through with 11 free throws in 15 attempts. Darnell McCall scored 14 and Taylor Holland 13.

  THURSDAY
10:35 p.m. -- Defending boys champ DeSoto won twice, 52-32 over Manvel and 59-55 over Austin Westlake. Defending girls champ Cy-Falls got through Thursday unscathed. The Lady Eagles beat Clear Creek 68-39 and College Park, 69-47. Cy-Falls meets DeSoto in a battle of 2-0 teams in a pool finale on Friday.
10:15 p.m. -- A very good day for defending state champ Flower Mound Marcus. The Marauders beat San Antonio Madison by 27 points and then disposed of La Marque by 38.
10 p.m. -- A rotten ending to an eventful day for the Sam Rayburn boys. Pearland, a one-point loser to the Texans earlier, rared back and walloped Mayde Creek 52-30. Mayde Creek earlier beat Sam Rayburn 54-50. All three teams finished pool play with 1-1 records, but tie-breakers left the Texans in the bronze bracket along with South Houston, Pasadena and Memorial. Pearland got the gold tie-breaker edge.
9:27 p.m. -- Pasadena ISD schools finished Thursday action with a 5-15 record. All lost at least one game. The girls from Memorial, South Houston and Sam Rayburn managed 1-1 marks and will take a crack at qualifying for gold or silver bracket play when pools competition resumes on Friday.
10:45 a.m. -- The Sam Rayburn boys pulled one of the biggest first-day surprises with a nail-biting 42-41 victory over Pearland. The Oilers had a chance to tie the game with a pair of free throws after the buzzer. The first shot was good, the second -- nope! A big victory for the Texans and a lively celebration to match.

11/20/11 > TEXAS INVITATIONAL: Smart, Forte Power Marauders to Boys Title

Marcus Smart dribbles up court (left) and later delivers a two-hand jam (right) in the closing minutes of the game.

Marcus Smart and Phil Forte, teammates bound for Oklahoma State next year, combined for all but 14 of their team's points Saturday night, powering defending Class 5A state champ Flower Mound Marcus to a 55-42 victory over Desoto in the title game of the McDonald's Texas Invitational Tournament at Phillips Field House.
Smart, who scored a game-high 21, calmly dropped in a pair of three-pointers in the third quarter to launch an impressive finishing kick for the Marauders and provide compelling entertainment for a national TV audience, a first for the tournament.
Smart scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half. He was named the tournament's outstanding player.
Forte, who scored 20 points, contributed a three-pointer in the closing minutes that gave the Marauders an insurmountable 45-35 lead.
Just for show, Smart and teammate Nick Banyard chipped in closing dunks.
The Marauders not only ended DeSoto's hopes of repeating as tournament champs, they made a strong case for all-time supremacy among Texas Invitational champs.
The average winning margin for the Marauders in five tournament games was 21.4 points, the closest call a nine-point victory in the semifinals over San Antonio Warren.
DeSoto received a magnificent effort from senior guard Benquan Petty, who scored 17 points and lit up the second half with five three-pointers. Jabril Durham added 17 for the Eagles.
Duncanville claimed the girls title with a 78-71 victory over Clear Springs. The Lady Pantherettes ousted defending champ Cy-Falls in the semifinals.

Marcus Smart accepts the Scott Talton Award as the 2011 Texas Invitational Tournament's outstanding player. Presenting the award is Charles Ament, head coach at Langham Creek High School and a former player for the late Scott Talton at Dobie.

11/20/11 > TEXAS INVITATIONAL: Dobie Boys Lose Silver Showdown to Atascocita

Dobie sophomore Daryl Edwards dishes the ball to the perimeter during second-half action.

Dobie sophomore Christian Sanders scored 20 points for the third game in a row, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Longhorn boys from falling to Atascocita in the Texas Invitational's Division 2 Silver title game on Saturday night.
The Eagles took advantage of 14 Dobie turnovers to claim a 45-40 victory at the Sam Rayburn gym.
The loss in the Division 2 Silver title game was the second in a row for a Pasadena ISD school. South Houston fell in the Silver championship contest last year to Manvel. The Trojans, however, went on to win the District 22-5A title.
The Longhorns played the game without senior guard Devonte Banks, who suffered an injured thumb earlier in the tournament.
Straped for scorers, Dobie closed a 16-7 gap at the end of the first quarter as Sanders picked up the pace. The Longhorns trailed by just a 24-23 margin at halftime, but lost control of the ball again in the third quarter.
The Eagles build a safe lead late in the game with the help of a three-pointer by Nolan Bilbo and timely put-back by William House.
Alex Douglas led Atascocita with 12 points. Bilbo added 10.
The Trojans were trying to become the first Pasadena ISD team in seven years to win a title outside of the bronze division.
District schools managed one bronze title on Saturday when the Memorial girls beat Dickinson 35-34. The Lady Mavericks went 4-1 in the tournament.

Dickinson beat Sam Rayburn 56-46 in the semifinals.
The South Houston girls fell to La Porte in their bid to reach the Division 2 Silver title game.
The boys teams from Memorial, Sam Rayburn and South Houston all played in the Division 2 Bronze semifinals. The Mavericks beat the Texans 57-53, but lost to Sharyland, 47-41, in the title game.
Sharyland ousted the Trojans in the semifinals, 61-56. Sam Rayburn turned around and beat South Houston, 66-54, in the third-place game.

Dobie's Paul Tran comes up to defend Atascocita's Nolan Bilbo.

Darnell McCall tries to penetrate the Eagles' defense, but Atascocita's Brian Doyle puts up a road block.

Dobie's Daryl Edwards goes eyeball-to-eyeball with Atascocita's Nolan Bilbo.

11/19/11 > TEXAS INVITATIONAL: Dobie Boys To Face Atascocita for Silver Title

SEE BELOW FOR POOL PLAY PHOTO ALBUM LINKS!

Dobie guard Taylor Holland races by his coach, Kevin Cross, and his teammates after stealing the ball against Houston Chavez.

Sophomore guard Christian Sanders scored 20 points in each game on Friday, leading the Dobie boys team to victories over Flower Mound and Houston Chavez and a spot in the Division 2 Silver championship game of the McDonald's Texas Invitational.
The Longhorns will face Atascocita for the championship at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the Sam Rayburn High gym.
Dobie's advance marks the second year in a row for a Pasadena ISD boys team to reach the title game in Division 2 Silver. South Houston got as far last year before falling to Manvel.
No Pasadena ISD team -- boys or girls -- has won a title higher than the Bronze level since 2004, when Dobie won the girls championship in a 16-team girls format. This year's tournament features 48 boys teams and 32 on the girls side.
Another Pasadena ISD team - the South Houston girls squad - also has a chance on Saturday to bid for a Division 2 Silver title, but the Lady Trojans will need to win twice. South Houston earned a spot in Saturday's semifinals with a 55-52 victory over Houston Yates.
The Lady Trojans will take on La Porte in semifinal action on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the South Houston gym. A victory would send South Houston to the title game against either Cy-Creek or Pearland Dawson. That game is set for 3 p.m. at Deer Park's Auxiliary Gym.
Sanders was one of five Dobie players in double figures in the Longhorns' victory over Flower Mound, played at the Longhorns' gym. Dobie survived on a flurry of free throws, 11 of which came from Sanders on 15 trips to the line.
Darnell McCall added 14 points to the Longhorn cause and Taylor Hollard scored 13.

Playing in Deer Park, the Longhorns jumped to a 20-point lead over Chavez in the first half. Holland backed Sanders' 20 points with 12 of his own. Devonte Banks added 10.
The Memorial boys will play for the Division 2 Bronze title on Saturday against Sharyland. Game time is 6 p.m. at the South Houston gym.
On the girls side, Memorial and Sam Rayburn will play semifinal games in Division 2 Bronze. With victories, the two will meet in the 1:30 p.m. title game at South Houston.

Left: Taylor Holland tries to regain his balance as he battles for a rebound with Demun Mercer. Right: Dobie's Donte Morris goes high for a rebound.

Longhorns guard Darnell McCall motors past Chavez's Ryan Otis on his way to an easy layup.

Waiting out a flood of free throws: Dobie's Gee Ramirez fights for position with Flower Mound's Jacob VanNattan.

Dobie's Chris Mendoza (13) tangles with a pair of Houston Chavez players for a rebound.

Stephanie Gale, a junior for the Memorial girls team, presses Brazoswood's Gabrielle Millan during the Lady Mavs' final pool play game on Friday.

11/01/11 > TEXAS INVITATIONAL: 80 Teams Tip Thursday; National TV Stage Set

McDONALD'S TEXAS INVITATIONAL WEBSITE LINK...

  By AL CARTER
  Pasadena ISD Communications
Coast to coast. And around the world.

Basketball players know the terms. And now the McDonald's Texas Invitational Basketball Tournament is set to give them new meaning for Texas high-school fans.

For the first time in the tournament's prestigious 13-year history, the Texas Invitational is set to go big time in prime time. The production dynamics of FOX College Sports will cloak Phillips Field House on Saturday night for the first live telecast of the tournament's feature game -- the championship of the Boys Division 1 Gold bracket.
The 7:30 p.m. contest will be available through cable providers coast to coast and around the world.
In another first for the tournament, the Girls Division 1 Gold game will be offered through live video streaming on FOXSports.com.
Global television exposure represents another major first for the tournament, which already ranks as one of the premier high-school tournaments of its kind.
"We are very pleased to have our feature game on national television," said Ben Meador, chairman of the tournament organizing committee.
"This game will offer the over 70 million Fox College Sports subscribers the opportunity to see some of the outstanding talent that comes out of the state of Texas. This will also allow viewers to see how our local community has come together to provide such great support for this event and make it one of the largest and most competitive tournaments in the country."
Boys teams from 48 schools across Texas and girls teams from 32 Texas schools will compete over three days at 10 gyms in Pasadena, Deer Park, South Houston and Houston. The tournament will stage 184 games, including 14 championship contests in various divisions on Saturday.
Boys and girls teams from all five Pasadena ISD high schools are entered. For the first time, the Deer Park ISD will partner in the tournament. Both of the Deer's boys and girls teams will compete and three Deer Park gyms - Deer Park North, along with the Watkins and Auxiliary gyms at Deer Park South - bolster the list of venues.
The tournament is sponsored by the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Pasadena ISD and Deer Park ISD education foundations. All profits from the tournament will be donated this year to those two education foundations.
Last year's tournament set a total attendance record of 35,000 and resulted in record revenues of $145,000, all of which went toward the funding of teacher mini-grants by the Pasadena ISD Education Foundation. Since 2003, the tournament has funneled $670,000 toward Pasadena ISD mini-grants.
The headline team in this year's tournament is defending Class 5A boys champion Flower Mound Marcus, which returns four starters from last spring's 39-1 squad. The Marauders are led by senior guards Phil Forte and Marcus Smart, and senior post Nick Banyard.
Forte and Smart combined to average 31 points a game last season. Both players signed last week to play for Oklahoma State. Banyard signed with New Mexico.
The list of participating schools with recent state titles includes Fort Bend Bush, North Crowley, Duncanville and DeSoto, last year's Texas Invitational champion.

The girls bracket features Cypress-Falls, last year's Division 1 Gold champion, and recent state champions Cypress-Fairbanks and Mansfield Summit.
The highlight for Pasadena ISD schools last year was South Houston's dash to the championship game in the Boys Division 2 Silver bracket. The Trojans won three of their first four games to reach title game, where they lost to Manvel. Still, the Trojans used their tournament momentum to claim a rare district championship during the regular season.
Pasadena ISD boys teams will play their two pool games in their home gyms on Thursday. Typically, 2-0 teams after pool play go into the Gold bracket, 1-1 teams in the Silver and 0-2 teams into the Bronze. The 24 teams in each division are divided into eight groups of three each for pool play.
The girls field has been reduced from 36 to 32 teams to ease scheduling problems.

The girls will play in four-team pool groups within their divisions and won't wrap up pool play until Friday. The team with the best record goes into the Gold Bracket, the second-best record into the Silver Bracket, the third-best record into the Bronze bracket and the fourth-best into the Consolation bracket.
With the exception of two games, each of the five Pasadena ISD girls team will play their three pool games on their home courts.
The girls teams from South Houston and Sam Rayburn open play on Thursday at noon at Phillips. The Memorial girls will face Deer Park in their second pool game at Phillips on 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
All 10 Pasadena ISD teams - boys and girls -- will compete in Division 2.
