The top 10 Pasadena High School seniors from the Class of 2011, honored at the Shining Stars Gala on Tuesday night. Barmore serves as president of the Pasadena ISD Education Foundation.

Five Pasadena High students recently had their artwork featured in the Art Alliance Center of Clear Lake Mentor Show. The students (pictured in the front row below) are Angel Pioquinto, Laura Arteaga, Jackie Cardens, Jenna Green and Martha Salinas. Arteaga received a third-place award for her artwork. Pictured in the back row are art teachers Karen Mitchell, Sally Bothwell and Laura Dickinson.

Seniors Ernesto Ramirez and Laura Arteaga (pictured below) were named Mr. and Miss Pasadena High School for 2011 at the Senior Prom earlier this month. Ramirez and Arteaga were also named to the school's Who's Who senior list along with Sarah Bermudez, Karla Carmona, Claudia Delacruz, April Flores, Amyriz Garcia, Isabel Herrera, Daniella Heysquierdo, Iliana Juarez, Pedro Lerma, Miguel Martinez, Diana Morales, Alaina Reyes, Kevin Rodriguez, Renaldo Ruiz, Ernesto Soliz, Ray Sanchez, Veronica Sarabia and Jessica Turrubiartes.

U.S. Rep. Ron Paul paid a visit to Pasadena High on Thursday (May 19). Rep. Paul met with senior leaders in a question-and-answer session in the school library and then addressed an assembly of seniors and juniors in the auditorium.

The marquee outside the school extends a warm welcome to the congressman.

PASADENA HS PHOTOS: Salinas Wins Congressional Art Contest

Senior Martha Salinas placed first in the recent Congressional Art Contest for the 29th District. Salinas finished second in the contest last year. Her winning entry will be on display in the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., for the next year. Salinas and her parents will be flown to Washington, D.C., to attend the exhibit's opening this summer.
Pasadena High junior Amanda Perez took second place in the contest and won a portable DVD player. Senior Arianna Melgoza received an honorable mention.

Abstract: the Eagle Elite program is an opportunity to introduce students from Pasadena High to physical fitness and exercise. This program has three primary goals: 1. to provide after-school activities for all students of Pasadena High; 2. to improve fitness levels for all students of Pasadena High; 3. to teach life-long fitness activities to all students of Pasadena High. This is an opportunity for students to be a part of a positive after-school program. They will learn leadership skills, commitment and the value of hard work. We want to develop character in our students.

Abstract: YouTube videos, iPods, mp3s and other media devices are abundantly popular with today's students. We will create audio and video podcasts of skills, lessons, interviews and other engaging activities both in and out of class. We will be able to post them on teacher websites and other places for student access 24 hours a day. Students will learn and control all portions of the creating, editing and finishing processes. We will use the media that consumes our students to educate them. Students will be able to transfer the skills to other class projects as well.

Mini-Grant Name: PSAT Prep
Abstract: Our sophomore AVID students are scoring well enough to be accepted into a university, but need further support in order to perform at the National Hispanic Merit Scholar level. I will work with a volunteer team of teachers to provide this support for the students during the summer. These students among others will be provided with study strategies, required skills and opportunities to continue their performance growth after the summer sessions are complete. They will come to 12 classes and will be provided with three hours of homework on a daily basis.

Jose Molina, a math teacher at Pasadena High, was honored recently as the outstanding student in the Pasadena ISD's Alternative Teacher Certification Program. Molina (right) received three certificates, one of which was presented for "Excellence in Teaching and Professional Development."

PASADENA HS PHOTOS: Art Clubs Host Sidewalk Chalk Festival

Pasadena High's National Art Honor Society and Art Club hosted a Sidewalk Chalk Art Festival at the school last Saturday.
The festival was both a fundraising activity for the clubs and a way to promote art in the community. Students from local intermediate, middle and elementary schools were invited to participate in the activities.
The students modeled the event after the Via Colori Street Art Festival which takes place in downtown Houston each fall. Several of the student artists have participated in the downtown event.
Jacky Cardenas, an NAHS member and Via Colori alumni, showcased her experience by creating a lovely portrait of Simba and his father from the "Lion King."
The event's theme was "When I Grow Up." Using that theme, students created an original work expressing how one grows through experiences with art.
