Thompson eighth-graders recently concluded their chemistry unit by conducting a "Foaming Elephant Toothpaste" experiment.
One student from each class was chosen to be the "scientist" in charge of conducting the experiment in a safe, methodical way.
The "Foaming Elephant Toothpaste " is a combination of 30 percent hydrogen peroxide, potassium iodide solution, dish soap and food coloring. The "scientist" uses the proper safety equipment while pouring the potassium iodide, which acts as a catalyst, into the other combined ingredients. The chemicals combine instantaneously and an exothermic reaction takes place.
Students were amazed to see the hot steam come out of the graduate cylinder and the foam.
(Below) Alberto Flores and Maria Carballo in the laboratory; (bottom) Wendy Flores, Johnea Blevins, Tia Joseph and Raquel Delgadillo.
