The Homework Club at Mae Smythe brought home solid results last school year, school officials report. The club, which met after school four days a week, was organized by a volunteer bilingual teacher, Blanca Alvarado, with support from social worker Gail Lake and school principal Quita Brown.
The purpose of the club is to motivate and to teach time management, organizational skills and responsibility, allowing students to complete homework assignments in a timely manner. Students gained self-esteem and confidence. The implementation of the club has proven to be a useful tool to assist students who need a little extra support in their quests to become long life learners.
