Gloria Jaramillo was named Matthys's Teacher of the Year for 2011 recently. Other awards went to Jackie Ochoa, the First-Year Teacher of the Year, and to school nurse Olga Lloyd, the campus winner of the "Together We Can" Award. Matthys students held a "Walk for Diabetes" on Thursday (March 10), strolling the perimeter of Matthys and South Houston Intermediate with posters in hand. The parade was led by Matthys music teacher David Husdpeth. The South Houston Police and Fire Departments provided escort service for the walk. Event photos follow.

Matthys celebrated its Seventh Annual Father's Night Out program earlier this month with presentations by Sheriff Adrian Garcia and South Houston High football Coach C.L Whittington. The purpose of the Father's Night Out program is to continue inspiring and motivating fathers to be actively involved in their children's education. Sheriff Garcia spoke to the dads about "Setting High Expectations for Your Children." Coach Whittington spoke about "The Importance of Family Values." Event photo follows.

MATTHYS PRIZE PARADE: Kinesthetic Teaching Lab Wins Grant

P.E. instructors Rudy Bowman and Natalia Menedez-Merson landed the Terry and Karen Brotherton Grant for Matthys with a proposal to fund a kinesthetic teaching lab. The lab will promote concepts that link body movement and physical activity to learning. The grant is for $3,933.93.
