Ten students from Moore participated in the Pasadena ISD's Gifted & Talent Showcase this week at Beverly Hills Intermediate. Students presented their Texas Standards Performance Projects and greeted family members and visitors from the community.

Moore Elementary has awarded four scholarships to graduating Dobie High seniors who once attended Moore. Pictured below are the four winners: Daniel Alanis, recipient of the Cliff Swearingen Scholarship, attending TCU in the fall; Kevin Ly, recipient of the Moore PTO Scholarship, attending UT-Austin in the fall; Ashley Feyes, recipient of the Jerry Davis Scholarship, attending Texas A&M in the fall; and Kathleen Nguyen, recipient of the Moore PTO Scholarship, attending the University of Houston in the fall.

Mini-Grant Name: Bridging Languages Between Home and School
Abstract: The Bridging Languages program will assist in bridging communication between school personnel and ELL parents. It will also accelerate English proficiency for LEP and monolingual students. Parents, LEP students and staff will have the opportunity to utilize the Rosetta Stone online program on campus and from home. ELL parents will gain the language skills needed to better assist their children in the educational process. Those skills will also allow them to enhance their lives. Staff members will have the opportunity to learn basic language skills in the foreign languages that predominate in our area.

Mini-Grant Name: Connecting Writing to Film Making
Abstract: Moore Elementary acknowledges that today's students are digital learners. The implementation of the American Film Institute Screen Education curriculum along with our Language Arts curriculum will allow students to take charge of their own learning as well as be engaged deeply in 21st Century skills. Using digital video, students will conceive and create works of visual art that demonstrate effective writing skills. The AFI curriculum will allow students to take traditional story writing and turn it into collaborative digital productions. Students from kindergarten through fourth grade will use the AFI process to become self-motivated, creative and collaborative writers.

Mini-Grant Name: Reading in the 21st Century
Abstract: The purpose of this program is to improve at-risk students' comprehension skills and motivate them to read by integrating technology and reading. This project will prepare the students to be 21st Century readers and learners through the use of iPads, ebooks, and educational apps that will allow them to learn in a different way. Teachers will use ebooks and apps for instruction to improve reading skills and motivate readers.

MOORE ES PHOTO: Fourth-Graders Raise Money for Japanese Relief

Fourth-graders at Moore organized a "Save Japan" collection of funds to help support Red Cross efforts in Japan. After reading about the struggles of the Japanese people and viewing some of the images of the recent earthquake disaster, fourth-grader Krystalyn Garcia decided to do something about it. After obtaining permission from the school, she began making signs and collecting money -- $416 in all -- all of it to go to the Red Cross.
