Response to the Tragedy in Connecticut:

A telephone message went out Monday, Dec. 17, from Superintendent Dr. Kirk Lewis to all Pasadena ISD families. Here is the text of the telephone message:

We have all watched with sadness the reports of the students and staff killed at Sandy Hook elementary school in Connecticut. As parents, your children are more precious to you than anything. During school hours, your children become ours and they are precious to us, too.

I know you are concerned about student safety. Our principals, teachers, staff and police are trained in safety procedures. They conduct drills at schools to prepare for incidents. I cannot honestly tell you the things that happened in Connecticut could never happen here. I can tell you we have done all we can reasonably do to keep our students and staff safe.

Your child may have concerns. I hope that you've been able to reassure them. Our school counselors will be on call this week to help students. Our police will be visible across the district as well.

 This week some students will be taking tests. There will also be activities filled with laughter and joy. We hope to make this week as normal as possible.

Please join me in keeping the people of Newtown, Connecticut…and our community…in your thoughts and prayers. ###

Todos emos visto con gran tristeza las noticias sobre los estudiantes y el personal en la escuela primaria en Newtown, Connecticut. Como padres, sus hijos son más preciosos para usted que nadie. Durante horas de escuela, sus hijos se convierten nuestros. Son preciosos para nosotros, también.

Sé que están preocupados por la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes. Puedo decirles que nuestros directores, maestros y personal de policía están capacitados en procedimientos de seguridad apropiados. Realizan simulacros en las escuelas para preparar diversos incidentes. Honestamente no puedo decirle cosas tales como sucedió en Connecticut nunca podrían ocurrir en Pasadena. Pero si puedo decirles que hemos hecho todo lo que razonablemente podemos hacer para proteger a nuestros estudiantes y nuestro personal.

Su hijo o hija pueden tener inquietudes y preguntas. Espero que como padres, han podido tranquilizarlos. Nuestros consejeros de escuela estaran esta semana preparados para ayudar a los estudiantes que necesiten hablar. Nuestra policía tabien será visible a través del distrito.

Al cerrar el semestre, algunos estudiantes estarán tomando pruebas. Habrá actividades llenas de risas y alegría. Es mi esperanza que podremos hacer esta semana tan normal como sea posible.
