Meeting Times-Monday at 2:30 in room 326 | Science Club is an organization designed to provide students the opportunity to learn more about science and science related fields through field trips, activities, and presentations by speakers. The club is open to all interested students. Dues are $3.00 each year. Science Club is responsible for the paper recycling program at Dobie and uses the money raised by this program to help pay for field trips and projects. Science Club is planning to build an Ecology Center at Dobie, and will use money from its fund raisers toward this goal. | Biodiesel ProjectThis real world based project involving the production of biodiesel as an alternative fuel source, has greatly stimulated interest in science through the publicity it has received in the community as well as through the hands on student involvement in its design and construction. Over the course of this past year, students ran a pilot reactor to learn about the process involved in the production of biodiesel and ran experiments to test the integrity of materials under production conditions. Frank Dobie website.) | | Past Events | Water Quality - In February of this year, seven Science Club students at Dobie H.S. completed the 9 hours of training offered through the Texas Watch Water Quality and Environmental Education Program. The students' are: Lyly Bui, Eduardo Jaimes, Chau Minh Luu, Trang Nguyen, Louis Parlangeli, Jeremy Richardson, and Henry Zhou.
The students received certificates verifying successful completion of the program and are Certified Water Quality Volunteer Monitors. This certification insures that the data collected will meet standards set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) approved Texas Watch Quality Assurance Project Plan. Texas Watch is an environmental education and monitoring program funded by a cooperative partnership formed among the TNRCC, The U.S. EPA, and Southwest Texas State University.
Beach Cleanup - Science Club sponsored the beach cleanup field trip on Saturday, September 18th. A total of 47 students, mostly from Science Club, Student Council, and four teachers attended. Science Club attends the beach cleanup at least once a year, usually in the fall, and sometimes a second time in spring (if the date is not too close to finals). We are assigned to a 1 mile strip of the beach, and pick up garbage that people had left or washed along the shore.
