Art Department - Airbrush Technology - Spring 2009 - $3,168

The art department wanted to integrate airbrush technology in our classrooms to help meet our curriculum guidelines. We felt that having airbrushes will be another useful aid for us to compete at a higher level in art competitions.

Our department will be expected to use the airbrushes to help create artwork for state competitions, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Rohm and Haas calendar contest and the Art of Harmony Coca- Cola contests.

We will be purchasing 12 airbrushes, 12 professional grade paint sets and safety masks.

In order to receive the grant, I had submit my grant to the Pasadena Education Foundation.  A committee reviews the needs of all the teachers and staff members who apply and each grant applicant receives a score.  The highest scored grants our honored until the foundation meets their quota .

BP Grant A+ for Energy Spring 2008 - $10,000

In a continuation of last year's winning BP grant proposal for a solar powered digital pipe organ, this year the students of Dobie High School and Pasadena Memorial High School will work together to add a laser light show to the musical aspect of the grant. One of the most important parts of the grant proposal is the research on and purchase of a programmable laser that will be able to display any logo chosen on the wall or in the air. Students will research, plan, and put together components of a "light show" to go with the musical aspects of last year's grant.

The premise of both the 2007 and the 2008 grants was that science is the universal language and that through science boundaries are broken down that allow for the sharing of ideas, information, and creativity. English Language Learners are of a particular focus of both grants, as the making and the enjoyment of music are as universal as the language of science.

One of the most exciting parts of working with the grants provided by British Petroleum is that alternative energy sources are to be used in the making and the implementation of each project. Therefore, the digital pipe organ as well as the lasers and lights are powered by batteries that have been charged by solar panels and a wind turbine.

Pasadena ISD Foundation 2008 - Biodiesel - Spring 2008 - $4,500

Science Club, along with community help and support, will be designing and constructing a small scale town that will get all its energy from working models (where possible) of alternative energy sources such as solar , wind, water, geothermal, nuclear.

Understanding Energy Sources:  Where does Biodiesel Fit In

Our project is the result of our teachers' collaborative efforts to make science relevant and interesting for our students by providing projects that involve and encourage them to be active participants in a comprehensive process.  We will integrate our science disciplines with other curricula to explore various types of energy sources.  The project is designed to raise environmental awareness about energy sources and the responsibility of students, teachers and the community by being a dynamic and evolving ongoing learning process that is research based.
