San Jacinto College and Pasadena ISD honored 49 Pasadena Early College High School (PECHS) students recently at the Chancellor’s Dual Diploma Medal ceremony for earning associates degrees while in high school.

“You achieved some incredible milestones in your life,” said Dr. Brenda Hellyer, San Jacinto College chancellor. “You have taken advantage of your high school years and will earn a high school diploma and also an associate’s degree. Congratulations. We are really proud of you.”

In partnership with San Jacinto College, PECHS provides district students with the opportunity to receive college credit starting in the ninth grade, leading to the completion of their Associate of Arts degree and high school diploma. Students can earn up to 62 credits in various fields that put them on the fast track to post-graduate and career opportunities.

This year, PECHS students earned multiple scholarship awards totaling $950,000, with three students earning the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation scholarship, given to only 400 students nationwide.

“Your hard work and your focus have truly paid off,” said Superintendent Dr. DeeAnn Powell. “You met my high expectations and most importantly the standards to earn your degrees.”

This is the third group of students to graduate from PECHS since it started in 2011. The early college high school program will expand this fall to each high school campus following the success of the pilot at Pasadena HS.

“We united for the past four years and through all of the love, we matured into young adults,” Francisco Bautista, PECHS valedictorian said. “I hope that the memories we have created and the obstacles we have overcome will stay with us throughout the years.”

The PECHS graduating Class of 2017 will officially walk across the stage, May 13, at NRG Stadium to receive their associate degrees.

“As a 1987 graduate of Pasadena High School, I am proud to say it is now time to spread your wings and fly like the mighty eagles you are,” Powell said. “Keep working hard, keep your eyes focused on your ultimate goals and never forget where you came from.”
