Two Pasadena ISD teachers were named Math Teachers of the Month by ConocoPhillips in recognition of the outstanding work they do to help their students excel in the classroom.

Pasadena’s Keesha Bruce and Miller’s Nancy Aguirre were treated to a visit from the Houston Astros’ mascot, Orbit, along with a ConocoPhillips representative to present their awards.

“I knew I was nominated but I never expected to get this far,” Aguirre said. “Without the support of my fellow teachers, administration and my family, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I appreciate each and every one of you.”

To be selected, teachers much meet the following criteria:

  • Commitment to excellence in mathematics teaching
  • Evidence of creativity and innovation in the classroom
  • Demonstration of leadership skills
  • Effective use of traditional and nontraditional teaching tools
  • Goes above and beyond to make in a difference in students' lives
  • Demonstrated increase in student achievement in mathematics
  • Demonstrated increase in student affinity for mathematics
  • Demonstrates alignment with ConocoPhillips SPIRIT Values

As ConocoPhillips Math Teachers of the Month, Aguirre and Bruce will be recognized with other math teachers during a pre-game ceremony at a Houston Astros home game this season. They will also receive a $1,000 donation to their campus; $100 gift card for classroom supplies; a campus appearance by Orbit; and Astros game-related gifts, including up to 10 free game tickets.

These teachers were selected by ConocoPhillips, along with the Houston Astros, for their work as exceptional teachers who inspire student interest and excitement in mathematics education and learning. Even with these accolades, the teachers remain humble.

“I am so appreciative of this award, but the real stars are my students,” Bruce said.
