Chess Championship Attracts 300 Students; Winners Announced

More than 300 chess enthusiasts from 43 campuses gathered at San Jacinto Intermediate, May 21, for the sixth annual chess championship.

The event attracted participants from Pasadena ISD, along with Deer Park and Alvin ISDs.

The championship was divided into four separate divisions including elementary (grades 3 and 4), middle (grades 5 and 6), intermediate (grades 7 and 8) and high school (grades 9-12). Each contestant played six games per round and received one point for each win and a half-point for a draw.

The following students won first place in their divisions: Genoa third grader Zaid Martinez; Young fourth grader Patricia Rebolloso; EC Mason Elementary fifth grader Jake Callaway of Alvin ISD; Morris sixth grader Patrick Ortega; Beverly Hills eighth grader Timmy Phan; and Pasadena High senior Dario Trevino.
