Community members, school administrators and members of both the Pasadena ISD and Deer Park ISD Education Foundations packed the room for the annual McDonald's Texas Invitational Basketball Tournament Check Presentation, Feb. 4 at the Frank Braden Center.

The tournament saw another successful year with a donation of $53,424 for the Deer Park Education Foundation and $155,575 for the Pasadena ISD Education Foundation.

During the presentations, Cristina Womack, standing in for volunteer coordinator Darla Haygood honored the volunteer of the year Barry Harris from Dobie High School.

Harris was surprised when his name was called, turned to the crowd and said, “I just try to do my best at whatever job I do. I thank you for this award, it is truly an honor.”

Retiring tournament chairman, Ben Meador, was honored for his 12 years of service by Herman Williams, Pasadena Education Foundation president-elect and Dr. Kirk Lewis, incoming tournament chairman.

Williams and Dr. Lewis presented Meador with a tournament trophy, just like the ones Meador had presented to countless teams throughout the years.

After hearing from Dr. DeeAnn Powell, Pasadena ISD superintendent of schools, and Victor White, Deer Park ISD superintendent of schools, guests were invited to enjoy refreshments and watch a slideshow of tournament photos.

Since its inception in 2003, the McDonald's Texas Invitational has provided nearly $2 million to the Pasadena ISD and Deer Park ISD Education Foundations, all of which goes back into local school needs.
