Billy G. Williams, a resident of Pasadena since 1945, received his diploma from Pasadena High School this summer--65 years after his scheduled graduation.

Williams was a junior at Pasadena when he enlisted into the United States Army. He left for boot camp the summer between his junior and senior years and never completed his high school education.

He was enlisted in the Army from 1950 to 1953, serving one of those years in the Korean War.

“I have done many things in my life that I’m proud of, but I’ve always regretted not earning my high school diploma,” Williams said. “I’d love to say that I am a graduate of Pasadena High School.”

Williams can finally join the ranks of Pasadena Alumni thanks to Texas Education Code 28.0251, that allows school districts to issue high school diplomas to eligible veterans.

In honor of a 92 year-old Pasadena tradition, Williams was presented not only his 1951 high school diploma, but also an alumni lapel pin that he can proudly wear to show others his eagle pride.

“This pin is worn over your heart and represents the history of Pasadena High School,” said Joe Saavedra, PHS principal. “We congratulate you and it is our honor to welcome you as an alumnus of PHS.”
