"I like going home with the gold," said Xavier Muhammad. "I always try my best and I never give up."
After only competing in the sport for five months, eight-year-old Muhammad set a record in July at a meet in Odessa. The record had stood for six years with a shot put throw of 8.57 meters.
In the 14 shot put events he's competed in this year, Muhammad has come away with 13 first place finishes, one second place and he has no intention of stopping anytime soon.
His parents Ishmael Muhammad, a South Houston Intermediate teacher and coach, and Rosalind Branch-Muhammad support him in everything he does.
"You never know what talents your children possess until you see it unfold before you," Branch-Muhammad said. "He wants to go to the Olympics one day and I believe that if it's in God's will, it will happen."
