Miller joined forces with community leaders to celebrate Global Youth Service Day and commit to a cleaner environment at their Beautify the Brook event last weekend. The event was made possible by the State Farm Youth Service of America Student Achievement grant.

“We were so fortunate to receive the grant to make our project possible,” Vanessa Reyes, Miller principal said. “It was a great opportunity to show our students how to identify issues within their community, take action and make an impact on the world around them.”

Staff, students and administrators were joined by Christopher Hoffman of the Salvation Army, Debbie Moseley of The Bridge Under Troubled Waters, Officer Damon Sonnier of the Pasadena ISD Police Department and Eric Li, one of the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards’ Top 10 Youth Volunteers.

“Our students jumped at the opportunity to help beautify their community,” Carol Baird, Miller peer facilitator said. “We had over 100 volunteers comprised of our Miller family, community members and local businesses. They all came together to make the project a success.”

The project included cleaning trash along Edgebrook, recycling plastic and aluminum, collecting old electronics, taking donations of household items and providing educational information on how to reduce, reuse and recycle.

“At Miller, we stress the importance of creating a culture of service in our school,” Reyes said. “I’m so incredibly proud of how we were all able to come together to accomplish our goal.”
