Pasadena High School held an appreciation banquet in the campus library recently to recognize alumni mentors for making a positive contribution in the lives of students at the campus.

The mentorship program, led by Carmen Solis, pairs community members with students in the PHS Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) program. The program is designed to help underachieving students with high academic potential prepare for entrance to colleges and universities.

“You have made an impact in the hearts and minds of these students and we are forever grateful to you for these reasons,” said Steven Martin, PHS assistant principal.

The mentors are comprised of politicians, doctors, local business men and women and others who have either graduated from Pasadena High School or who have close ties to the Pasadena community. The mentors and seniors met once a month to discuss their futures, in addition to taking a field trip to the University of Houston to get a feel of the college life.

PHS Principal Joe Saavedra shared his gratitude towards the mentors for their dedication and commitment to the students.

“You’re planting seeds that will encourage our students to finish strong this year and take lessons with them as they start planning for the future,” Saavedra said. “We are so thankful to you for taking the time to help our students. ”

In appreciation for their guidance and support the AVID students wrote letters to their mentors and some of the students were asked to stand and share their thoughts.

“You taught me how to be an adult and how to talk to adults in a professional manner. I have learned from your background and your adventures,” said Joseph Alaniz. “I would like for you to keep giving advice to students because it continues to make a positive impact in people’s lives.”
