Pasadena ISD Board approves projects for 2017 Bond

The Pasadena ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved a list of projects recommended by the Future Facilities and Planning Committee for Proposition A - the district’s $135 million (no-tax increase) bond election.

“The 2017 Future Facilities and Planning Committee reassessed and prioritized projects cut from the 2014 Bond due to lack of funding,” said Pasadena ISD Superintendent DeeAnn Powell.

Powell adds that Proposition A would pose no-tax increase to the current 28 cent Interest & Sinking (I&S) tax and is necessary for PISD to continue to improve facilities in the district and phase out older, less efficient buildings. The bond proposal also includes maintenance upgrades, safety improvements, technology updates throughout the district, as well as new buses.

“Since Proposition A will not increase the I&S tax rate, PISD is essentially asking for our taxpayers’ permission to purchase bonds for the recommended projects,” added Powell.

The Future Facilities Committee identified $135 million in needs across the district as they worked toward a goal of addressing as many items as possible with a “no-tax increase” bond election.

The board approved the following proposed projects:

  • New Riverstone Ranch Intermediate School

  • Red Bluff Elementary Replacement Campus (on site)

  • Transportation Facility and Site Work

  • Maintenance and Operations - Warehouse Facility

  • Facility - Safety Upgrades

  • Technology Equipment

  • Fine Arts Instruments

  • New Buses

  • Facilities Management

Due to new demographic data and the anticipated costs related to the rebuilding of Thompson Intermediate, a decision to relocate Thompson Intermediate to the Riverstone Ranch property is being considered instead of an eleventh Intermediate campus. The Board of Trustees is waiting to receive the estimated costs for Thompson repairs due to Hurricane Harvey.  Additional costs for rebuilding  a larger Thompson Intermediate at the new site have been factored into the 2017 Bond Package.
