During a special called school board meeting at noon today, Pasadena ISD Trustees named DeeAnn Powell, Ed.D., as the lone finalist for Superintendent of Schools. Powell, 46, has served Pasadena ISD since 1991 as a teacher, facilitator, assistant principal, principal, associate superintendent for campus development and for the past two years as deputy superintendent for campus development. She holds a doctorate of education from University of Houston - Clear Lake.
“It is awesome to have grown up in Pasadena and attended schools here,” said Powell, “and now to have the opportunity to serve the kids of the district in this way.”
At the beginning of summer the current superintendent, Dr. Kirk Lewis, announced his plans to retire at the end of 2015.
“Dr. Powell has some big shoes to fill following a successful superintendent who has accomplished a great deal in his tenure,” said Board President Mariselle Quijano. “We are confident in her ability to take us to even greater heights.”
Dr. Kirk Lewis made a brief statement following the announcement addressing the audience of mostly district employees, “You’re in good hands.”
The state of Texas requires school districts to adhere to a 21-day waiting period after a finalist is named. Following the 21 days, the district may officially hire the candidate.
Consultants David Thompson and Mike Moses assisted trustees with the search for a new superintendent. The Board reviewed applications from 22 candidates from Texas and three other states. They interviewed seven candidates last week in thorough, two-hour interviews. The candidates were diverse in terms of race, gender, age, professional experience and training.
Dec. 8 the Board will approve the Superintendent of Schools’ contract.
The new superintendent will assume duties in Pasadena ISD Jan. 15, 2016.
