Sam Rayburn High’s Martha Galan captured the top ranking for her colored drawing, “Churning Up Dust.” Memorial High’s Alondra Cruz also scored “Best of Show” for her wood sculpture, “A Warrior’s Gaze.”

The students’ art pieces will now compete in Grand Prix judging against top winners from 62 school districts in the Greater Houston area, a contest expected to include over 300,000 pieces.

Final judging and the HLSR art auction will be held in March.

Although final judging is limited to pieces from high school students, two other Pasadena ISD students earned “Best of Show” honors for their artwork.

Julie Trinh, an eighth-grader at Beverly Hills Intermediate, won for her piece, “Eggs for My Daughter.” And Christopher Saldana, a fifth-grader at De Zavala Middle School, took top honors for his piece, “His Majesty.”

Students competed in one of five categories: colored drawing, mixed media, monochromatic drawings, painting and 3D. Entries were awarded white (third place), red (second place) or blue ribbons. From the blue-ribbon entries, pieces were designated as “Best of Show,” “Gold Medal,” “Special Merit” or “Finalist.”

All entries are on display at the Pasadena ISD Administration Building, 1515 Cherrybrook Ln., in Pasadena.

Pasadena High’s Diego Mondragon will compete in the School Art Contest’s timed competition – the Quick Draw Contest. The competition will be held on-site at the NRG Center.
