The South Houston and Sam Rayburn High School football programs were recently recognized as finalists for the Class 6A Touchdown Club of Houston Sportsmanship Award; with Rayburn taking home the third place trophy.

Finalists for the sportsmanship award were chosen by referees across the Greater Houston area who assigned a rating to each high school football teams based on the actions of the coach, team and support groups, respect for the American flag, lowest number of unsportsmanlike and personal foul penalties.

“These two schools have earned their recognition as competitors on and off the field as those who do things the right way,” said Pasadena ISD Athletic Director Rupert Jaso.

“The leadership, discipline and integrity that Coach Wynn and Coach Lane instill in their respective football programs is something that PISD applauds and is very proud of,” said Jaso.

As an added bonus, the keynote address and trophy presentation to Texan’s Coach Wynn was made by Rayburn alumni Wade Hopkins, class of 1987.

The Touchdown Club recognized the two coaches at the 13th Annual Comerica Bank Sportsmanship Luncheon, presented by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at the JW Marriott's Liberty Hall.

The Touchdown Club is the Houston chapter of the National Football Foundation. Founded in 1947 with leadership from General Douglas MacArthur, Army coach Earl "Red" Blaik and journalist Grantland Rice, the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame - a non-profit educational organization - runs programs designed to use the power of amateur football in developing scholarship, citizenship and athletic achievement in young people.
