Thirty high school seniors were honored recently at Pasadena ISD’s first annual Vanguard Community Service Awards event.

The Vanguard Community Service awards are given to students for accumulating at least 300 volunteer service hours outside of school activities. This year’s honorees donated nearly 10,000 hours of volunteer work throughout the Greater Houston area.

In the past, the PISD Board of Trustees recognized these students during April’s Board meeting. This year, however, the district rolled out the red carpet at the Carmen Orozco Professional Development Building to give a special salute to these community superheroes.

Service projects included hurricane relief efforts, green-thumb initiatives, organizing food and clothing drives, helping at community events, volunteering at nursing homes, spending time teaching young children and extending a helping hand at local organizations.

The superhero-themed ceremony featured props, posters and other comic-book derived decor. Following a video presentation featuring all of this year’s winners, each student received a medal and a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the school board and Superintendent of Schools Dr. DeeAnn Powell. The honorees also received a gift bag of various take-home items.

“We are so fortunate to have students in this district who are willing to give back in a variety of ways and care deeply for the well-being of others," said Powell. "These students are model citizens and I am so proud of the volunteer work they have accomplished throughout their high school career.”
