New District Supt. Dr. DeeAnn Powell Makes History on Day of Firsts
The Pasadena ISD Board of Trustees, district administrators and campus leaders celebrate Dr. DeeAnn Powell's first official day as superintendent of schools on Monday.
As the old saying goes, “there is a first time for everything.” This is certainly true for Dr. DeeAnn Powell, who made history on Monday -- her first day on the job as superintendent of the Pasadena ISD.
Dr. Powell is the first graduate of Pasadena ISD to be appointed superintendent, having attended L.F. Smith and Williams elementary schools, Queens Intermediate and Pasadena High School. She is also the first female superintendent in the history of the district. On her first day, the Board of Trustees proclaimed Feb. 1, 2016 as Dr. DeeAnn Powell Day throughout the district.
“I am so honored that I was chosen for this position,” Dr. Powell said. “We have an awesome team that is going to help me make this district special every day for every child, so thank you for what you do.”
To mark the special occasion, the Pasadena ISD School Board, district administrators and principals gathered in the board room at the Administration Building to surprise Dr. Powell.
When Dr. Powell entered the room, a look of shock spread across her face as she made her way through an arch of swords presented by the South Houston High Navy JROTC.
The board presented Dr. Powell with a proclamation. Dr. Troy McCarley, associate superintendent of campus development and a long-time colleague of the new superintendent, presented a folded U.S. flag to Dr. Powell on behalf of the district.
“In history, you fly a U.S. flag on important buildings and facilities,” Dr. McCarley said. “Today we have flown this flag here at the administration building as a piece of history for the first lady superintendent in Pasadena ISD and the first Pasadena ISD graduate.”
The celebration continued with a video presentation of students and staff from each school she attended and where she worked, sending their best wishes to Dr. Powell.
Powell has served the district as a history teacher, peer facilitator, assistant principal, principal, associate superintendent and most recently deputy superintendent. Dr. Powell was named by the Pasadena ISD board in December to replace retired superintendent Dr. Kirk Lewis.
Dr. Powell said she received some advice from Dr. Lewis on her first day.
“I got an early email from Dr. Lewis that said, ‘It’s official. You can’t back out now,’" Dr. Powell said. “I laughed about that and then I kind of teared up. It’s all the excitement.”
Dr. Powell expressed excitement about starting her new position.
“This team is what it is all about,” Dr. Powell said. “The children’s lives that we impact on a daily basis are my motivation. I love this district. I am 100 percent excited. I will give it 110 percent every day for this district.”
