Pasadena ISD Superintendent Dr. DeeAnn Powell was recently honored as the 2018 Outstanding Support from a Superintendent for Professional Learning award recipient for the state of Texas. She was recognized by Learning Forward at the annual Texas Association of School Administrators’ mid-winter conference.

The award is given to a superintendent who has demonstrated support for professional learning systems in their school district through the implementation of various initiatives.

“Dr. Powell works collaboratively with the school board to develop standards and polices that promote professional learning and a growth mindset for all district employees,” said Traci Goodwin, director of professional development.

Goodwin, who heads the PISD’s professional development complex, said Powell’s leadership efforts were instrumental in providing over 5,000 training opportunities for staff members last school year.

One of these opportunities involved securing internationally known author and presenter Mike Mattos for a training session in January 2017. Mattos talked to staff about the different approaches to building a collaborative culture for effective school assessments through Professional Learning Communities, also called PLCs, which many campuses have adopted and continued to use.

Powell champions efforts to ensure that every support staff member receives training in their respective fields. Some of these development trainings include a weeklong academy for police officers and CPR/CPI training for bus drivers.

“Dr. Powell continuously allocates district resources to various professional development opportunities, creating an environment where all employees have access to professional learning,” Goodwin said.

Leaning Forward is a professional development organization that teaches members ways to leverage professional learning to ensure students have an equal opportunity to learn at high levels.
