Fifty of the top readers from Bailey Elementary gathered in the school’s cafeteria for a Chick-fil-A nugget party to celebrate Bailey’s win in the Pasadena ISD Beanstack Winter Read Challenge.

During the month of January, elementary students throughout the district used Beanstack, a mobile and web-based tool that promotes learning through challenges, to track their reading time. Chick-fil-A sponsored the Winter Read Challenge by providing ten gift cards per campus for student prizes, a nugget party for the district winner and a faculty luncheon. At the end of the month, Bailey Elementary had the highest recorded reading time and was named the winner.

“There is a big push for reading here,” says Bailey librarian Donna Huemme. “When students come in before school, they make sure to log their reading minutes.”

In addition to winning the district-wide challenge, Bailey was a recipient of the national level award and will receive prizes from Penguin Random House and Beanstack, along with Pearl Hall Elementary, Freeman Elementary and Garfield Elementary.

The Winter Read Challenge is part of a two-year-long effort by PISD to promote a culture of reading. The initiative, called the Pasadena ISD 5 Million Minute Reading Challenge, encourages elementary-age students to work together to read for 5 million minutes each school year. As of March 2, PISD students have surpassed the original goal of 5 million reading minutes, for an impressive total of 6,041,840 minutes.
