South Houston High School Assistant Principal Joy Brown-Johnson was named the Extraordinary Employer Support award recipient by Employer Support of the Guard (ESGR), honoring her devotion to the Army National Guard.

Timur Tsend, SHHS health science instructor, who served as a sergeant in the military for a year in the Horn of Africa, nominated Brown-Johnson for the award as a symbol of gratitude for helping him transition back to normalcy after his deployment.

“She was new to the job and did not know much about the transition, but she took the challenge head on and provided the needed information in a timely manner. She also kept in touch with me during the deployment and made sure that I was well,” said Tsend.

The award was presented to Brown-Johnson by Texas ESGR Area 2 Chair Wyvette McLendon, who thanked Brown-Johnson for her dedication to her colleague.

“We are here to tell you thank you for your support of your service member that you have graciously hired here and thank you as a supervisor for understanding the value that he brings to the table,” said McLendon during the presentation.

South Houston joins multiple organizations across the U.S. that have received a statement of support for standing by a Guardian Reserve employee.

Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) is a Department of Defense program that develops and promotes supportive work environments for Service members in the Reserve Components through outreach, recognition, and educational opportunities that increase awareness of applicable laws.  It also provides assistance in resolving conflicts between the Service members and their employers.
