Last week, the J. Frank Dobie Speech and Debate team competed at the Speech and Debate Association’s National Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky. The tournament is the largest academic competition in the country with over 6,000 participants across the nation.

While most students are off for summer break, the Dobie team, including

Below are the final Dobie Speech and Debate placings:

  • Lexi Martinez placed top 30 in the Program Oral Interpretation.
  • Jocelyn Floyd placed top 60 in Program Oral Interpretation and Poetry Reading.
  • Emily Reyes and Kelly Nguyen competed on behalf of the East Texas Gold World Schools Debate Team and made it to the top 50 percent of the 173 teams.
  • Kelly Nguyen also beat over 600 competitors in the Extemporaneous Debate competition.

“Our students have put in countless hours of work to get to this point, and we are so incredibly proud of our team and excited for the upcoming season,” said
Team President, Kelly Nguyen.
