Susan G. Komen recently honored Pasadena ISD as the number one fundraising team in the Greater Houston area to participate in the Komen Houston Race for the Cure. Pasadena ISD is the only school district in Houston to participate as a team for the annual event.

“Komen Houston is committed to saving lives locally and fighting cancer globally,” said Julie Voss, executive director of Susan G. Komen Houston. “We are investing more than $1 million in the community through research, grants and direct services."

The Pasadena ISD Komen team is comprised of employees, parents, students and members of the community. In 2018, they raised over $63,000 for the charity through T-shirt sales and various activities and events among campuses across the district, which included carnivals, dances and group walks.

The t-shirts, which are sold to employees and students, feature a new design each year and honors employees who are breast cancer survivors as well as those who have succumbed to the disease. One of the incentives for buying a shirt, is that employees are allowed to wear them on Thursdays with jeans. These days are known as Passionately Pink Thursdays.

“We are super proud of our employees and school efforts to support Komen,” said Marsha Jones, PISD executive director of curriculum and instruction. “We are so honored and proud to be a part of a giving and philanthropic school district.”

Dr. Karen Holt, a former Pasadena ISD employee, introduced the project to the district in 2005. In 2016, a committee took over the fundraising efforts. The committee is currently comprised of South Belt Elementary assistant principal Amber Morris, Melillo Middle School principal Diane Wheeler and Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction Marsha Jones.
