Rayburn High School senior Cristina Gonzalez will advance to the Skills USA Culinary Arts State Competition in Corpus Christi this April, after recently winning first place at regionals.

The competition evaluates how prepared a student is for employment in the food industry, judging contestants on excellence and professionalism in knife skills, chicken fabrication, food preparation, taste, appearance, safety and sanitation.

Rayburn H.S. culinary arts teacher Andrea Medina beamed with pride as Gonzalez accepted her award.

"Proud is an understatement of what I felt watching and then hearing her name as she won first place," said Medina. "Her ease of motions showed her preparation and knowledge of the tasks at hand. I can't wait to see what the future holds for her in the culinary world."
