Dobie High School 2015 valedictorian Elissa Nguyen will be honored for her outstanding academic achievements at the regional Vietnamese-American Youth Excellence Recognition Luncheon Aug. 2 at the Kim Son Restaurant in Bellaire.

The event, sponsored by the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association (VCSA) for 19 years, recognizes Vietnamese-American high school students who graduated as either valedictorian or salutatorian of their respective high schools in the Greater Houston area.

The program also serves to encourage younger generations of Vietnamese-Americans to strive for academic excellence and instill a strong sense of civic responsibility among all Vietnamese- Americans in the Greater Houston area.

Nguyen established herself as a well-rounded student during her years at Dobie, graduating with a grade point average above 5.5. While that is impressive enough, she also earned top rank as a violist. Nguyen received All-State and All-Area recognition in 2014 and 2015. She participated in the National Honor Society; UIL Spelling and UIL writing; and she has served as president of Key Club, Latin-Club, and captain of Roman Life Study. Nguyen donated numerous hours of community service work at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital, various events at the Vietnamese Martyrs Church, McDonald’s Houston Children’s Festival, the Houston Food Bank and more. She also organized several animal rescue/animal rights events.

Nguyen will represent Pasadena ISD at the luncheon among 28 other high school students selected by the VCSA.

The recognition ceremony will feature Vietnamese cuisine, scholarship award presentations, cultural performances, and a keynote address by Charlie Quy Ton, CEO of Alfalfa Nails Supply and Regal Nails. Six hundred guests are expected to attend, including school district administrators; elected officials, such as City Council Members, county officials, and congressional representatives; and local business representatives.

The event is open to all members of the community. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased at the VCSA Center, located at 4615 Belle Park Dr. Houston, TX 77072.
