The Pasadena ISD Board of Trustees’ tradition of providing excellence in leadership is gaining attention at the state level.

The trustees are one of five Outstanding School Boards in Texas for 2015 in the annual H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards program. The board travels to Austin on Sunday to be honored at a reception sponsored by H-E-B. The Pasadena ISD Board is also under consideration for a second Award of Distinction from among these top five school districts.

This prestigious honor recognizes school boards that demonstrate strong leadership in the community. The Pasadena ISD School Board is among only five in the state chosen as for the award. As a result, the board received a $5,000 grant in February to benefit the district.

The H-E-B awards program celebrates public school professionals whose leadership and dedication inspire a love of learning in students of all backgrounds and abilities.

With more than $800,000 in cash prizes awarded annually to deserving teachers, principals, school districts and early childhood facilities and school boards, H-E-B Excellence in Education is the largest monetary recognition program for educators in Texas and one of the largest in the nation.

Among the accomplishments of the Board cited by H-E-B were the expansion of career and technical education and the development of the Lewis Career and Technical High School, the opening of the district’s first Early College High School program at Pasadena High School and its commitment to expand early college programs to the other high schools in Pasadena ISD, and the dramatic improvement in graduation rates and rapid growth in the number of students taking dual credit and advanced placement courses.

“Community members and district staff frequently express appreciation to the Board of Trustees for their work, commitment and dedication to the students and staff of Pasadena ISD,” School Superintendent Dr. Kirk Lewis, said. “It is a fitting honor for them to be recognized for their leadership and excellence of service. Congratulations.”
