Bondy Intermediate social studies teacher and football coach Jason Denham, Bobby Shaw Middle School choir teacher Melissa Medina and Lewis Career and Technical High School campus content specialist Abby Morris were named category winners at the Pasadena ISD’s Together We Can employee recognition luncheon on Friday at the Acapulco Ballroom in Pasadena.

Denham was honored with the Achieve More award which is presented to the district teacher or employee who is instrumental in contributing to student success or toward the accomplishment of a major school or department goal.

Denham not only coaches football, he coaches life. He helps students tackle obstacles, grow as athletes and academically by building personal relationships with students. He has been instrumental in organizing and analyzing testing data. He creates lessons that allow students to express their creativity and knowledge about the subject. He also helps students build critical thinking skills by creating higher order questions throughout the day’s lessons. He is a role model for students and staff to follow.

Medina was named the winner of the Create Magic award, presented to a district teacher or employee who creates an innovative classroom experience or finds a creative way to impact the lives of students, staff and the community.

With a passion for music, Medina voluntarily created a class for SUCCESS and ABLE students that meets twice a week during a portion of her conference period. She researched and designed musical games and hands-on learning activities for them leading up to a performance before the winter break. Not satisfied with just reaching students, she also created a faculty a capella group called the “Shaw-capellas” who have performed at various school events. Her efforts create a sense of community for the teachers and the students at her campus.

Morris received the Think Big award presented to an employee who comes up with a brilliant idea that changes the way the district, a campus or a department approaches and solves a major issue.

Morris developed an innovative, interactive Schoology course that helps students prepare for the STAAR test while developing their English skills. She took the time to record herself reading each week’s passage so that struggling students could listen while they read along, helping them to relate to the material.

The Together We Can award luncheon is an annual event held each spring.
