Five seniors from both Sam Rayburn and South Houston High Schools were each awarded $1,000 scholarships by the Pasadena-South Rotary Club. The club presented the scholarships and honored the students and their parents during a luncheon at Johnny Tamale in Pasadena.

This scholarship program is rich in history and has awarded over 143 scholarships in its 36 year span.

“In 1978 Dr. William P. Jones challenged our club by offering $10,000 to start a scholarship program on the condition that all members attend every meeting for one year,” Rotary Treasurer Charles Davis said. “The members complied and in 1979, we were able to give a $500 scholarship from the accumulated interest. In 1980 the scholarship raised to $1,000 with the help of club fundraisers and since 1990 we’ve been able to award that amount annually to students.”

Each student must apply for the scholarship and is selected upon several criteria including academic merit.

“I want to thank you so much for this opportunity to earn a scholarship. I attend Sam Rayburn and it is a great school, in a great district. I love everything about my school and the JROTC program,” Wendy Forrester said to the Rotarians. “I want to give a special thanks to Mr. [Robert] Stock and Ms. [Sarah] Carnes for helping me throughout the application process. I really want to extend a special thanks to my Colonel [Alan] Mooneyham. Without Colonel I wouldn’t be here today. He has pushed me to do the best I can and I appreciate him for that.”
