The Pasadena ISD School Health Advisory Council was recently named one of five statewide winners of the 2018 SHAC award by “It’s Time Texas” and will be recognized at the Healthier Texas Summit in October.

It’s Time Texas is a statewide non-profit organization focused on improving the landscape of health and wellness in Texas.

A release by It’s Time Texas stated, “PISD’s SHAC understands that healthy students are better students and they have worked to support district-wide efforts to create a culture of health at schools, within families, and throughout the community. They are always seeking ways to extend support to programs that help build a culture of health.”

The Pasadena ISD School Health Advisory Council is made up of parents, community members and district employees who meet quarterly to work on creating a healthier Pasadena.

“Our group truly understands that a healthy community is best for everyone living within that community,” said Alise Neff, Instructional Specialist for Coordinated School Health.

The Pasadena ISD SHAC was selected as an award recipient for their work on the Pasadena Community Initiative last year.

The project was a collaboration of multiple community partners focused on promoting healthy living in Pasadena. The initiative addressed various issues such as creating safe routes to school, increasing physical activity minute during school hours and providing nutrition education within core curriculum.

“SHAC is very supportive of this project and gives feedback on the plans so we can continue to do what is best for our students,” said Neff. “We have strong community involvement that is always seeking ways to support the health and wellness of our students and families.”

It’s Time Texas offers free programs, tools and services designed to use innovative technology and harness the collective power of Texas’ leading agencies, institutions, organizations, and companies to empower Texans to lead healthier lives and build healthier communities.
