Beverly Hills Intermediate recently hosted the eighth annual PISD Spring Chess Tournament.

32 PISD schools, five Deer Park ISD schools and one private school took part in the event, which amounted to 245 competitors.

“This is a big event. We are pleased with the amount of support and its continued growth,” said James R. Early, PISD chess coordinator.

Volunteers, campus administrators and central office personnel cheered on the chess enthusiasts as they put their skills to the test.

“I love that so many of our schools and students are involved in chess,” said Karen Hickman, PISD deputy superintendent. “As a teacher I always struggled around how to teach a student to think deeply. Chess is such a great tool to help kids practice thinking and strategizing.”

Each participant competed in five games and received one point for each win and a half-point for each draw.
