Three Pasadena High School students, David Hoang, Jennifer Martinez and Elizabeth Islas recently competed as a team at the World Scholars Cup competition, where they qualified for the Global Round and scored over 20,000 points.

According to their website, the World Scholars Cup is different from other academic tournaments, stating that it is a “celebration of the joy of learning and an enrichment opportunity that motivates students not just to demonstrate their existing strengths but also to discover new ones.”

The event was held at Ridge Point High School and included both individual and team events, such as debate, various test, writing prompt and quiz rounds.

“In addition to all the preparation and studying they put into this, the event itself was about a fifteen hour day for the students,” said Dr. Aislinn Clinch, the team’s coach. “I’m very proud of their dedication and hard work.”

Hoang, Martinez and Islas’s hard work paid off with the PHS scholars bringing home the following nine individual medals from the competition:

David Hoang
- Gold in Debate
- Silver in Science
- Silver in Writing
- Top School Scholar
- Gold in Champion Scholarship

Jennifer Martinez
- Silver in History of Diplomacy
- Silver in Science
- Silver in Special Area
Elizabeth Islas
- 5th Place Overall as a Davinci Scholar

Islas, the only senior on the team, said that teamwork was thekey to their success at the World Scholars Cup.

“We all brought something to the team and helped each other out,” said Islas.

“Our team really came together and collaborated,” said Hoang. “It was the first time for all of us, but we made a strong entrance and did our best.”
