South Houston Intermediate Principal Laura Gomez was recently named a finalist for the H-E-B 2019 Excellence in Education principal award.

H-E-B representatives and district administrators surprised Gomez during a pep rally at SHI and presented her with a $2,500 check for the campus and a $1,000 personal check.

The HEB Excellence in Education Awards are designed to honor outstanding public school professionals and to thank them for their dedication and commitment. Since its inception in 2002, the program has awarded over $10 million to Texas educators, schools and districts.

“Laura is an outstanding leader in Pasadena ISD with a passion for high student achievement,” said Rhonda Parmer, associate superintendent of campus development. “Teachers, students and parents adore her and understand that her ultimate vision for the school is to be a beacon in the South Houston Intermediate community.”

Through this award program, HEB’s mission is to pay tribute to those educators who go the extra mile each and every day to serve students and their communities and inspire others to do the same.

“Having worked with Laura for 25 years, I have seen time and again that families are her number one priority,” said Gail Ward, SHI Assistant Principal. “She truly cares about the students, community and faculty. She is never afraid to show the occasional tough love and that is something I respect so much about her.”

Gomez will join other finalists at an H-E-B gala, where judges will conduct face-to-face interviews and announce the winners on May 5th.

“I cannot ask for a better leader and mentor to work alongside than Laura,” said Trevor Parker, an assistant principal at the campus for four years. “Although she does what she does for personal and professional satisfaction, not for the accolades, she is well deserving of widespread recognition.”

If selected as the winning principal, Gomez will receive a $10,000 cash prize and a $25,000 grant for South Houston Intermediate.
