Pasadena Citizen sports journalist Robert Avery was recently named the 2019 Pasadena ISD Athletics Hall of Fame Appreciation Award recipient for his work covering athletics in the district.

The award is given annually to a local community member who has made a significant impact in the Pasadena ISD sports community and the Athletics Hall of Fame.

“The committee is proud to recognize Robert with this award,” said Athletics Hall of Fame President Bill Barmore. “As an award-winning journalist, Robert is truly an expert for any and all Pasadena ISD sports news. His contributions in documenting the Pasadena ISD athletes and spotlighting historic moments both on the court and on the field are invaluable.”

Avery, a sports journalist for the Pasadena Citizen newspaper since 1990, has also received Houston Press Club awards in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2011. In 1997, Avery was presented with journalism awards in three categories - sports photography, sports column writing and sports writing from the Associated Press.

The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches honored Avery with its Sportswriter of the Year award, following the 2013-2014 season and the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools has named Avery “Sportswriter of the Year” twice.

“Robert is a fixture on the sidelines of nearly every Pasadena ISD game, scribbling notes and stats and taking photos,” said PISD Athletic Director Rupert Jaso. “His passion for providing media coverage and highlighting the achievements of our student athletes is something that is evident in everything he does. We are grateful for his hard work and we congratulate him on this well-deserved award.”
