Officer Damon Sonnier was recently named Pasadena ISD’s Officer of the Year by his peers during the district’s national police week celebration at the Administration Building.

Sonnier has served Pasadena ISD since February of 2014, following a short stint with the Klein ISD Police Department. Currently assigned to Patrol, Sonnier also serves as a member of the department’s Crisis Negotiations Team, Honor Guard Team, and as a Field Training Officer.

A 2013 graduate of the Houston Community College Police Academy, he also holds an Advanced Peace Officer Certification and is a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Certified Instructor.

“I feel honored to be selected by my peers because there are so many officers who deserve this award,” said Sonnier. “It means so much to me because we are all out there doing the same job and if it wasn’t for the hard work of our entire police force, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

According to his fellow officers, Officer Sonnier is rarely seen without a smile and is always willing to go the extra mile. He is a positive role model for students and is often seen giving high fives, participating in the occasional dance-off with students and offering a listening ear to high school students.

“I always emphasis that the officer of the year is selected by his/her peers because those are the men and women in the trenches with them working every day and seeing their impact on the district,” said Pasadena ISD Police Chief Stewart Russell. “Officer Sonier is well deserving of this award. He always has a smile on his face, is always helping someone and if he doesn’t know the answer to something, he’s always going to do his best to find the answer.”

Additionally during the ceremony, Pasadena ISD’s three newest officers, Officer Samuel Barajas, Officer Chris Jackson and Officer Jimmy Trevino were officially sworn in by Chief Russell.

National Police Week, created by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, is a national observance that pays tribute to the local, state, and federal peace officers who have died or who have been disabled in the line of duty.
